The ADL receipts are in. Right-wing extremists are responsible for effectively 100% of antisemitic attacks in America. So why are politicians pointing at Muslims and the Left?
Its interesting how Germany has been doing the same, that is conflating pro Palestinian protests with anti semitism. Anti semitism that the government records show stems from the right wing, at similarly significant proportions in comparison to other groups. The percentage differ with higher incidents because now wearing a watermelon is criminalized, or Handala or saying „from the River to the sea Palestine will be free“ This is the country that has ostensibly dealt with its guilt so much that it proudly supports a genocide (again) while claiming Nie Wieder „never again“. It is here that readers should ask why this pattern can be seen in both these countries? Maybe another piece on this Qassim. And thanks for your writing and solid consistent principles.
The riots that broke out in Minneapolis after the murder of George Floyd was incited by a right winger. This is such an old and well used technique in the U.S. And with emotions high the Right wingers knew they could ignite the crowd so they (right wing) could do their damage and blame the Left. Then BLM protests started happening. Suddenly, that phrase was stolen for Blue Lives Matter(police), White lives Matter 🙄 etc. Then All Lives Matter. This was a way to ignore the truth about killings among the black communities by police.
Finally, it has become sickening to see the antisemitism label roll out for justified protest. There were even laws that were discussed (maybe passed by now) to make boycotting products from Israel illegal! This is Fascism. Trying to intimidate anyone telling the truth and standing up for the injustice. Then making it a crime for a personal decisions not to purchase or support the criminal behavior. We truly are scraping away at the bottom!
My connection to sanity comes from my connections with good people who see the truth and stand up to the bullying. It takes tremendous bravery!
There is no doubt in my mind that there are more of us. We must understand that at all times.
We should not be blinded by the fact that part of Netanyahu is using his own intelligence services to sow disinformation / misinformation within the media and social media. This benefits his standing in the continued actions in Gaza and Lebanon and makes his campaign appear to be just and for the safety of Israel and the global Jewish community. Netanyahu understands that taking control of the message aids him and also Trump in continuing the war and deportation of people from their countries.
I remember when the first Muslim was running for mayor in Dearborn, MI. Rumors and lies began emerging about Muslims. One in particular, claimed a Muslim father shot and killed his teenage daughter on the front lawn for talking to a Black teenager. This story was false but it fueled hatred like it was meant to do. Abdullah Hammoud was elected despite this.
Thank you for speaking up. As a Jewish woman, I feel the rise in anti-semitism, deeply. But I am staunchly opposed to support of the current Israeli government and am even starting to wonder if religious states are an answer for any ills in the world. Many of my Jewish friends feel similarly — my friends are all lefties. We are sickened by how Israel has destroyed its reputation, but I am wondering if we should have been looking more closely even before the aftermath of Oct 7th. But many are not willing to go that far. Your story about the synagogue and cemetery in Philly is very moving and made me remember that stepping up takes many forms.
Such a clearly-written essay. Politicians point at Muslims and the left because it's a lot easier than to redirect their finger towards themselves.
At the city council meeting in San Diego last month, discussing whether to adopt the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, what was brought out by one of the council members was the many other cities, including Chicago, that had adopted this resolution. Towads the end of the evening I was beginning to think that adopting this resolution would only increase anti-Semitism. (All the power that AIPAC has to influence elections, and we're whining, "poor us, people say such cruel things.")
I've got slightly swarthy skin (Ashkenazi Jewish, grandparents from Lithuania) and years ago some white guy came up to me, a total stranger, to tell me to go back to where I came from. And, yes, when Wajahat Ali's book came out, I bought and read it immediately.(The preface has perfect examples of Yes...And, the basis of comedy improv.)
Oh, and by the way, one of the Palestinians at the council meeting was kind enough to drive me home after the meeting, even though it was out of his way.
There are Jewish people and congregations very well assimilated into our democracy (such as it is). Jewish academics, professionals and business persons have enriched our republic, more than pulling their weight for our society. I suspect that the rampant antisemitism that riddled the majority WASP population in the 40's through the 70's had been gradually crumbling as the Civil Rights movements and anti-discrimination statutes took hold. Now in my old age I am infuriated to see the ignorance of those sneering slurs circulating again amongst the whining WASPs Wasps is my preferred label, short, sharp and perhaps as annoying as their namesake insects. WASPs is much less cumbersome than "White Nationalism" or "White Supremacy" and for the most part, is not associated with violence. Perhaps the white supremacists would do us the favor of adopting the older acronym and toning down their ugliness to once again merely sneering?
I have heard of the ADL and read some of their views. I never understood and still do not understand why they are not considered a right-wing terrorist group. It has always seemed to me they were hate filled and preached hate. Thank you for bringing the receipts for this group.
I am a 79-year old Jew. I have long known that the ADL under Greenblatt has conflated criticism of Israel (and its genocide in Gaza, its apartheid in the West Bank, and its insistence for a greater Israel, of all the land from the river to the sea and beyond as Antisemitic. Every time Antisemitic actions occur, our Muslim/Arab neighbors rush to help (I knew about the PA incident Rashid mentions and am not surprised that he helped).
So well said! As a Jew who believes that the only way to effectively fight antisemitism is through collective liberation, I couldn't agree more with your post. Thank you!
Excellent analysis! The conflation of anti-semitism with any criticism of the government of Israel is a very prevalent concern and the media uses it to intentionally mislead anyone who is not paying any real attention to what is happening in Gaza and elsewhere.
I just tried to access the heat map - when focusing on antisemitic incidents only, the ideology filter isn't there, just the following explanation:
" Note: “Antisemitic Incidents“ is a separate dataset whose results are not filterable by Ideology. For a full thematic analysis of antisemitic incidents, including the ideology of the perpetrators, please see ADL’s annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents."
I saw this too. It undermines the author's claim that only 3 antisemitic incidents have been motivated by left wing ideology. It would be good to see this addressed.

Excellent article Qasim. Spot on! 🎯

Since it’s supposedly the Jews who are behind the plot to replace white people with Muslims, can you explain to me what’s in it for them?
Right on, Qasim, and may I add my appreciation for this great piece. ☮️☮️

Well written and researched

You said it all, much better than I could ever hope to! Thank you for that.

Same here. I strongly suspect they've realised being able to sort by ideology doesn't give the results they want, so you can't see it anymore!
