Qasim, I wanted to alert you to a book I am re-reading about Iran. It is The Coup: 1953, the CIA and the roots of U.S.-Iranian Relations, by Ervand Abrahamian.
Well footnoted, with all the receipts. It was published in 2013 and not only recounts what happened but also points out how it was presented in both the US and the UK, in such a way that few civilians are even aware of what happened.
It also had access to internal communications in several countries and outlined the racist and elitist manner in which the leadership in Iran was denigrated, made to look either infantile, savage, or simply deranged so as to present them as people who were incapable of making rational choices. The US stance had a great deal to do with Joe McCarthy and made yelling "Communist" at the top of one's lungs a method to justify all actions and to get permission to act. That Britain was stealing oil and refusing to address that was pooh-poohed as a plot against the West instead of land-based piracy, as though BP was entitled to Iran's oil for a nickel a barrel. Attempts to keep their own resources for their own people were "irrational behavior," and refusal to accept pillage and looting was somehow a crime.
I have this on Kindle and don't remember what it cost, but it wasn't much. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good look at why they see us as the Great Satan. No one should have to look up to their mugger.
That last line does everything. 'No one should have to look up to their mugger.' The entire history of why that relationship broke the way it did, compressed into one sentence. Abrahamian spent a whole book building to something you just said in ten words.
Love the Dad joke!! Thanks for that laugh!. Would love to hear Michigan as a state of consideration too. I also especially loved your article on universal health care. There is no damn or logical reason to not have some kind of a single payor system like every other developed country in the world.
Talking of Sheryl Crowe, is the line "Hey, I feel like a woman" to be construed along the lines of the Kinks' song "Lola": "I'm glad I'm a man, and so's Lola"?
