I apologize. I didn't read your rebuttal to Bret Stephens...I don't see how anyone can say if Israel intended genocide it would have been systematic. Unless Mr. Stephens has been living on Mr. Netanyahu's couch for nearly three years the statement rebuts itself.
The only case Israel can make for itself is not whether they have been systematically attempting to kill everyone in Gaza, would be to claim that it was more fun to kill everyone in Gaza systematically instead of all in one day.
The article (not yours, Mr. Stephens') was a load of crap from the opening line not even worthy of something Big Brother would utter to alter history because the narrative is so ridiculous not even Israel's most ardent defenders would try it in court---when they go to court---when's not really a question if the Israeli leaders will be prosecute, it's a question of how long do they let them continue the genocide before we bring them the justice. You know Leopold probably killed a million before even the other imperialists controlling Africa said whoa!.
too many always have to die before we bring these dudes to account a
Thank you for the truth. Thank you for your courage to take on the NYT. My heart shatters when I see the faces of the children, the mothers, fathers and grand parents who are suffering and dying at the hands of evil. Netanyahu and his minions deserve every punishment coming to them through international tribunals. I pray that your words and research will be referenced in those trials.
One more thing...can I just say how disgusted I feel when I see and hear that cutsie nickname Netanyahu has? Please people call him by his full name not the juvenile name given to him by his fervent followers.
this is extremely well written and sourced. thank you. i’m in a state of constant sadness that america is complicit in this horror. we continue to enable this monster netanyahu.
Your article is facts, his is propaganda, as you so thoroughly report on. I so wish I could grow exponentially in size to be able to take out these genocidal maniacs and throw them into cells forever. Each and every one that enabled this. I feel so helpless. The tears don't stop.
Bret Stephen's was just ONE reason I canceled my NYT subscription a few years back.
This article was amazing, Qasim! Point by point you brought down this absurd reality ignorant people try to explain away. Like "don't believe your lying eyes". The word genocide does not need to be redefined - it speaks for itself!
WAKE UP PEOPLE! Israel is killing children, women, men on purpose.
Thank you for clarifying that there are 2 Bret Stephens. I don’t read the NYT because of its problems and assumed it was the other guy. This only makes it worse.
Not the world. Certain parts of the world. Being skeptical brings conversation between peoples. Being skeptical allows my mind to be open to other views and educate me on the"why". We are a collective. No one knows it all. I am old. I can't understand what is happening in the world today. I expect certain outcomes based on what I am seeing.
I also agree that your article contains more than enough proof to bring of war crimes.
Netanyahu only continue this war past the first few months was that he knew that if the war was over he would have to return his ordenary life he would have to face the results of his crimes.
First, I thought the stephens’ piece very strained and desperate. “Gaza is not as bad as you think because it is not a ‘genocide’, argued ignoring lots of well known information”. I only read it because you highlighted it. I read NYT for news not opinion
Second No question for me that Israel intends to remove all Palestinians from Gaza and continue to take over villages and land in the main section of Palestine.
‘Ethnic cleansing’ makes sense to me as clear easy to follow concept.
On genocide, in response to the argument that millions died in WW2 but only the killing of Jews (and Romani?) count as ‘genocide’ you seem troubled.
To assert that the word did not exist is weak. It would mean to killing of the Jews was not genocide either.
All in all we end up with legal definitions and moral rhetoric being conflated. I dont think I have found the use since its original and sole application especially enlightening. It may have some descriptive power but that is increasingly confused, and leads to the arguments like the Stephen’s one that if it is not ‘genocide’ then those killings are all ok.
So whether is starving millions (Ireland, Ukraine, China) or killing them or both surely it is the deaths that matter?
Unfortunately, unlike valid reasoning where the facts determine the conclusion, some people have adopted the mechanism of the conclusion determining the facts. Thank you Qasim for patiently using the correct paradigm to expose the fallacious arguments put forward by Mr. Stephens.
Heartfelt thanks to you, Qasim Rashid. You're doing the good work and it matters.
It's the little (or even big) efforts that add to the growing pushback to all the right-wing propaganda, lying, mis/disinformation. You're doing the necessary work.
Mehdi Hasan recently debated 20 "conservatives" on Jubilee and risked platforming a lot of fascists, white nationalists, & people who just plain failed in that 2 hour debate. You wouldn't know from what they 'claimed' afterwards in their safe spaces.
He ate their lunch. They looked like the morally bankrupt, misinformed people that continue to infect our country. I think it matters and I'm grateful for you, Mehdi, & others who are fighting the good fight to correct the lies & better inform us.
What surprised me about you & Mehdi is how hard it is for me to stay informed about what is happening in Gaza. I consider myself to be pretty well-informed but I struggle to keep up with what you (& Bret) wrote about.
That tells me our news media needs to do a better job. I knew Israel was murdering innocent women & children (10s of 1000s of them), committing war crimes like bombing hospitals but I didn't realize the Israeli military was forcing Palestinians into safe areas only to bomb those safe areas. Or that children are being targeted by Israeli snipers.
Why is our news media failing? The waters around Gaza are so 'muddied' it's hard to keep up.
I also like that you posted it for free. When I am able, I will subscribe to you.
I think you should submit your article/rebuttal to Bret, to the NYT. Or, if they won't publish your article, see if the Washington Post, The Guardian or some other credible publication will.
It's obvious to me that the NYT failed it's journalistic responsibility to inform it's readers. Bret Stephens failed miserably as well.
I was intrigued by the title of Stephens' NYT opinion piece and read it in the spirit of "let's hear what Netanyahu apologists have to say". But its sloppiness and lack of a logical thread left me reeling even before the realization of its moral deficiency and outright dishonesty kicked in. Thank you for detailing the appalling lies and propaganda in this amateurish opinion piece.

And that is the problem.
Always.
I have always thought that Bret Stephens is an ass and could never understand how Maureen Dowd could do joint conversations with him.

I want Bret Stephens to suffer pain and loss for years before he dies alone and hungry.

Australia debates whether killing of Aborigines was genocide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide_of_Indigenous_AustraliansGenocide of Indigenous Australians - Wikipedia. There are many other examples of applying the term to past, usually in relation to European colonisation.

thank you for writing this. if NYT had any balls they'd publish this response in their next edition
