FINAL UPDATE: 31 Days & 868 Miles Marched. 4 Days & 132 Miles Left.

A progress update from the ground on 1000 Miles to Memphis—and three ways you can keep growing this movement for voting rights

Some 31 days ago we launched an ambitious journey. A 1000 miles to speak up for voting rights. Today we are in the final four days. More than speak, we sought to walk the walk, literally. Today, 868 miles into our journey, we face a tumultuous final few days. Memphis is without power. City officials are working diligently to restore it to 100,000 people. Meanwhile, Gary, Indiana has been without power for nearly two weeks. It is not lost on us that while we are marching for voting rights stripped from Black Americans, Black majority populations are also being denied basic access to electricity.

These painful events are a stark reminder that if we cannot protect voting rights, we cannot protect any of the other hard fought rights we need to survive. As I’ve said before, these injustices mandate that we persist.

So, nevertheless, we persist.

Passing Through Mississippi

Today’s march took us through Clarksdale, and the iconic Riverside Hotel, birthplace of the Delta Blues. Originally a hospital for Black Americans in Jim Crow America, Mrs. ZL Hill purchased it and transformed it into a Green book hotel.

We had the privilege of receiving a personal tour from the great grandson of Mrs. ZL Hill, Justin Hill. Just Win Humanity also made a contribution to continue to repair and build the Riverside Hotel, and thus preserve this historical icon and national treasure.

As we marched through downtown Clarksdale, MS, a local music shop owner asked why we were marching? When we shared our voting rights march, he insisted we accept his invitation to rest for a minute and have some water to cool off from the blistering 93 degree heat. We gratefully accepted.
