This is disgusting and unbelievable that USA, the country that professes to be the leader is following the third world countries in this derogatory behavior. Another reason to bring the predatory Republicans to light and change this horrific practice. Children need to be protected at all costs.
As someone who married a 16 year-old when I was 18, I would suggest that 16 be the minimal age for marriage, with the consent of a judge. Despite the fact that such marriages often do not last, we celebrated 72 years of marriage even though we worked together for more than 30 years. We were too young but it would have been criminal if we had not been allowed to marry as she was pregnant.
This is really nothing to brag about. You were in the tiniest minority of "successful" marriages when you married way too young. (And no, 16 should NOT ever be legal for marriage no matter what given what we know about brain development.) Shotgun marriages were very common back then, but it doesn't make it okay. My mother married my dad at 14 and lied about her age when she did it. My dad was 23. This was almost 95 years ago, during the Great Depression. Both of my parents hated each other, and my mother was always resentful because she was pushed into marriage. They were married nearly 66 years. Big whoop. The marriage was a disaster.
The difference is that both of us wanted to get married. It wasn't easy but we made it. Notice, I said, "with the consent of a judge." That was to protect both of them. I didn't say it should be easy and it should not be.
As a native Californian, I wasn’t aware of my state’s adherence to such an archaic laws! I am appalled!! Will definitely be making some calls to state legislators…
But perhaps what’s worse is the US name on the list of hold outs to ban child marriage along side Iran, Sudan, Somalia…Tonga!!! WTAF🤯
According to Guiffre, Epstein wanted girls who had their first period because then they weren’t children. Looks like he isn’t alone in that preference and once again female bodies are someone else’s playgrounds.
This is not okay…young girls Should be experiencing school, proms, friendships, and first loves not marriage. We need to increase the age to the age of consent, to the same as legal age for alcohol and the right to vote.
An important distinction you didn’t emphasize is that “child marriages” are overwhelmingly GIRLS being married to adults. I’ve not seen statistics about underage boys being married. This issue is about restricting abortion rights (make the girl marry because she is pregnant), not about pedophilia per se. This was is a feminist issue so most men ignore it, at least until a girl child they know is involved.
Surely the bottom line, most basic definition of a decent society is one that frowns upon raping children?
