America has lost it's morals. History is being written as we watch. They can slant it their way but the ICE agents and their tactics will be condemned for eternity. Just as the Nazis were under Hitler and no just "following orders" will be excused, nor should it!
This story really hit me. "not just a tragedy, but evidence" -- I agree. I am so ashamed for my country, when refugees come here, expecting "welcome the stranger" and "give me your tired, your poor." His daughter said that all he had were slippers, not shoes. Death must have been painful, and this should be prosecuted.
Leaving a blind man alone in sub-freezing weather isn’t a policy disagreement. It’s a human failure. If the video contradicts the official statement, that alone warrants independent investigation. Accountability shouldn’t be partisan.
Those DHS agents must be identified and held accountable - they are being protected under the larger umbrella. Who in their right minds can just leave a blind person in a parking lot in that weather. It's just so outrageous and tragic.
This horrific death of Nural Amin Shah Alam, disturbed me more than I can say. These ICE agents must be held accountable & the DHS that has spawned them, must be abolished. I cannot even fathom how any person can do this to another person. How terrified he must have been. I don't know how much more of this inhumanity my heart can take.
It was only a matter of time. There have been loads of "near miss" stories like this one, but someone just happened to give the abandoned person a ride, or in some other way they just happened to survive. Given the weather in a huge part of the country, and given the habit of just dumping people, it was going to happen soon, that someone would die.
There is a long history of these abandonment incidents. Most often they occur between white LEOs and minorities. Almost every agency is guilty of the practice.
More often than not the victim is a person of color, especially the vilified people of indigenous descent many of whom have chronic issues with alcohol. When they migrate to white municipalities where alcohol is far more readily available than on reservations, many of which ban the presence of alcohol entirely, they wind up regularly inebriated. Roving police patrols sometimes actually pick up the victims on the pretext of taking them to shelter and then drive several miles out into the countryside, dumping them with the instruction to walk home. Another form of abuse is to let passed out drunks lie where they fall in the expectation they will die from exposure.
The old canard "The only good injun is a dead injun" is alive and well...and now being applied helter skelter to every vulnerable person.
This is Horrific. Our government dolling out cruel and unusual punishment for non violations of civil law - the death penalty for being a lawful immigrant? This is government insanity- the invasion of malignant toxicity into our government training and behavior - front line government workers emboldened by the attempted dictatorship. Too much is happening without any kind of due process or fairness involved at all. They intended harm to this man; his death is on purpose. government carelessness in bogus law enforcement cannot be tolerated or made common. This is so outrageous. We must bounce back from the spiral down where we shift our government and our electorate away from hate. We must demand our government act constitutionally and with proper standards of care - to act as we expect our government to behave toward any of us. Where is humanity and play ol’ professionalism - extinct in this regime.
Dear Qasim, I am horrified by the death of Nural Amin Shah Alam. My heart breaks for him, for his family and for the entire Islamic community of faith. How painful to lose such a loved one at any time, but especially in this way, during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
I have particular heartache and a horrifying sense of responsibility as a Buddhist practitioner. The Rohingya are persecuted by a buddhist majority in Myanmar. Their unbelievable cruelty to the Rohingya people is abhorrent to me. It is the furthest thing from the compassion that Buddha taught. It's not the first time I've asked myself what I could be doing. I guess it helps me understand what the true followers of Jesus, who cared for the least of these, must feel when they watch what's done in the name of Christianity in this regime of christian nationalists (lowercase here is intentional.)
Thank you, Qasim, for your wise and compassionate reporting and for continually opening my heart.
Dear Nasim, your stamina in bringing stories like this into the open is superhuman; I know prayer and faith support your spirit and your soul, but I still wish you unending support in addition. Thank you and blessings to you.

Very sad inhumane his family should sue the federal government!
I am so disgusted by this. I usually have a lot to say, but I'm just getting worn down by the horrible shit I hear on an hour-to-hour basis now.

Thank you for reporting on this. This happened in my city, and we are furious.

That poor man.
How could they do such a thing to him?
