Fabulous, inspiring and HOPEFUL interview, Qasim. THANK YOU, Dr. Kendi for the work you are doing to lead us out of these "white is right" democracy-demolishing, genocidal times.

Maybe is wasn't in our best interest to let red states keep their children poor and ignorant.

Kimberly Stone's avatar

Maybe the scarcity of education in red states is a problem.

Kimberly Stone's avatar

so basically, this erroneous belief in scarcity is the primary disfunction.

“They” are now going after Mamdani’s wife…desperately snooping through old social media posts etc. These creepy terrorists need to-be rounded up to spend their lives in prison for invasion of privacy of citizens while protecting a pedophile and multi-CONVICTED-Felon-Rapist. BECAUSE Mamdani is popular and successful, the GOP mafia will work triple time to dig up any garbage they can find.

Dear Qasim, Thank you so much for bringing Professor Kendi to your channel. “How to be an Anti Racist” continues to be so inspiring and instructive for me as I try my best to do what is needed in this world. It was so wonderful to hear his voice today. I’m looking forward to reading his new book.

I think one of the things that sustains this replacement theory (at least in the US) in recent years is the changing demographics. The U.S. Census Bureau (which conducts the census every 10 years) has for several decades been predicting that by 2050 (give or take a decade) that "whites" will be a numerical minority (i.e. under 51%) of the population, IF birth, death, and immigration rates remain constant. Of course, immigration rates have recently taken quite a dip. Even if that prediction becomes true, that doesn't necessarily mean they whites will become a political/social/economic minority; I'm sure powerful whites will try to hold on to those forms of power as long as they can.

Part of the shifting demographics is dependent on how society defines who is white. As you know. Qasim, Irish and Italians were not considered white when they first arrived. On the census, Hispanics/Latinos are considered an ethnic group and can choose which race they see themselves as; most choose "white," while the the majority of the remainder choose "some other race" or "black." Middle Easterners have traditionally been classified as white, but a couple years ago, the Census created a new racial category (MENA, Middle Eastern, North African) that they can choose, so that may lower the percent of whites in the US on the next census by a couple percentage points.

The Census does not ask about one's religion, so it cannot say with great certainty to what extent various religious groups are increasing or decreasing in the population. But I highly doubt that people who chant in the streets "you will not replace us" are studying Census data, demographics, or how "racial groups" are formed. Certainly, if they say "Blacks are taking over," they are genuinely uninformed, because since 1790 when Blacks were 19-20% of the population, the Black population has decreased to about 12-14%, depending how you define them.

So just as there was a nugget of truth to the "Democratic pedophilia in the pizza parlor" conspiracy theory (it was pedophilia across the political spectrum by mostly powerful, white men in Palm Beach), there is a bit of truth to the replacement theory (white people are declining in percent in the United States). Personally, I look forward to the growing diversity, but some fear it. I suspect those who fear it are either those who have a lot of power and think they might have to share it or those who have little and need to blame others for their lack.

It’s only “replacement” to those who view Black and brown people as subhuman. Otherwise it’s just human beings being human.

Mark Fennell's avatar

They don't view them as subhuman. They view them as competitors. Which is consistent with human nature, regardless of skin colour. You are just bringing race into to rig the competition.

Wonderful conversation. Engaging In spite of the disturbing content.
