An Augustinan Pope will never cede any reproductive freedoms to women under any circumstances....both can die. The response will be "God's will be done." There was no moral outrage over priests being jailed for abusing children. Only prayers for the abuser to repent. And be taken care of. Apparently this is not a mortal sin in the church. But allowing the deaths of women and children is just "God works in mysterious ways", but the women rot in hell, while the children languish in limbo.
If you think DT and pals give a damn over the pope... except to crow about being AMERICAN, save your breath. P25 is written for WASPS, with his fundamentalist base thrown a few crumbs. We need secular action to save the country, not Christian Nationalist bs sprinkled with catholic right wingers mucking up the work.
I really wish we could educate everyone that abortion is not the equivalent of murdering babies. So many people just cannot get past this fallacy. I think Catholics have done the most damage when it comes to this issue. I'm glad this Pope has some progressive views, but he's got a long way to go.
Since I follow no religion, it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other. I’m not going to lose sleep over these christian tenets. I’d like to think the Vatican would be a little more open minded since we are in the 21st century.
The Catholic Church treats women as a lower class of humans who are not capable of leadership, and whose very lives are disposable in the cause of their faith, especially if they’re not virgins. 😏
My main concerns was LGBTQ+ and where he stood on abortion. I expected he would be negative on abortion. But I don't know where he stand on LGBTQ+ cases. I don't expect accept or him changing the catholic church view on same sex marriage. But if he accept them as human beings as pope Francis did. That is positive.
It's the culture of the church that defines what injustices a Pope can recognize. Lots of progress has been made but gender justice issues are still a sticking point. It has to be a grassroots movement demanding/accommodating gender justice in the Catholic space. A pope can't do it alone, it just provokes backlash. The answer is US.
I appreciate this thorough reporting on the new Pope.
While there are problems in the Catholic Church, I’m thrilled that they chose this man. I’m not Catholic, but this is a statement to the world. This is the Catholic Church rejecting what 45 stands for. And a lot of people are Catholic.
Thank you for this important work. I am very curious to see if and how any of his stances will change in this position of (absolute?) power. You’re right: we are waiting — and watching.
Pope Leo also emphasized the need to continue the synodal process--dialogue, listening, and a "culture of encounter." This is hopeful, as it suggests that he views himself and his church as deconstruct-able. It signals a commitment to the spirit of Vatican II, which redefined the Church as the people of God on a journey.
Thank you for your analysis. His positions on many issues is praiseworthy. It’s a shame that his Catholic faith also allows/requires him to be so wrong on safe access to abortion and reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ persons, and sexual abuse by priests. Sexual abuse by priests, for Christ’s sake!!! That’s too much for me to admire anything else about him. Or the church.
Thank you!

Thank you for this! It's another article I'm saving!

And, as usual, you and I agree on almost everything.
