I'm surprised that even you don't get it. What's the first thing that happened when he issued it? The ACLU challenged it in court. Do you think he didn't know that would happen? He's playing a nice game with the Republicans. They have been screaming at him for months to do this and he's been TRYING to tell them it won't work. They keep whining, so he's giving them what they want and PROVING that not only does it not work, it won't stand up in court. So Republicans, there's your proof. Shut up.

I can't believe you don't see that. You're supposed to be an expert at looking below the surface. Look.

Your 2019 quote from Biden regarding asylum seekers show how many of the policies during the Biden administration are no different than those of the Trump administration. The sheep who are blindly following the Biden administration and their aiding and abetting genocide are.no.different. than MAGA followers, plain and simple.

Brilliant Qasim! Thank you so much the record straight and sharing your hard earned receipts!

When I read the news today my first thought was Biden blocking asylum from Palestine. Because I already know he and Trump are so stupendously similar. I hope people see the light, you are a brilliant beacon!

Keep teaching us โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธโค๏ธ

Wonderful clear explanation, America needs more advocates like you.

Bro thank you so much you nailed it on the head perfectly. All points I have been screaming for years. I don't get people these days. I really don't. I'm so embarrassed at the way people behave in this country when it comes to things like this.

Thank you for reading. Glad this is of assistance in explaining to others.

Thank-you very much for this. I feel sorry that we apparently no longer are proud of, and in fact are intentionally ruining our reputation of, being a haven for refugees & asylum seekers around the world. As you mention, there is vigorous vetting of asylum seekers to make sure they qualify.

I think Biden is simply doing this to try to nullify this as an issue favoring Trump rather than putting any effort into making a case for granting asylum to those who merit it.

Truly...makes a mockery of the Statue of Liberty and the welcoming poem engraved upon it.

That's what I was thinking.

Thank you for this information. Itโ€™s surprising how many of us do not know the law related to immigrants and refugees.

Welcome and thank you for reading. Truly unfortunate how much misinformation is out there.

Reading Biden comments thoroughly didnโ€™t not reflect your concerns. Please listen to his comments again

I literally quote Biden verbatim from 2019 and from yesterday. Please stop pretending he isn't going back on his word.

If Biden can initiate this executive order, canโ€™t he create an executive order that would actually help? Resources, money, personnel? They find ways to โ€˜work aroundโ€™ military crap all the time! Send money for immigration attorneys, healthcare workers, etc.!

There's already a lawsuit challenging this EO because a president can't change law or the constitution with an EO. Only Congress can. Biden has been saying this all along and it's why he insisted that there had to be legislation to fix the problem. But Republicans insist he has the power to fix it all by himself. I think the EO is an election year tactic.

Qasim Rashid, Esq.'s avatar

Agreed, and that part is extremely frustrating. We always seem to find plenty of money for war, but for a humane immigration policy we're suddenly bankrupt.

jrose's avatar

If he were to go back on this policy, what are some EOs he could execute that would actually help?

Qasim Rashid, Esq.'s avatar

Lots. Here's a comprehensive piece on actions Biden should take: https://www.raicestexas.org/sotu

The article didn't really address what Biden himself can do with executive orders. All 4 (or, at least 3) suggestions require budget to accomplish - which seems to require a functional congress that can pass bi-partisan legislation.

1 Increasing the budget for our immigration courts to alleviate the backlog that has kept three million people languishing in immigration purgatory"

2. Increasing the number of qualified asylum officers to process asylum cases

3. Expanding language access so that everyone can understand their options and have their cases accurately judged on their merits

4. Securing universal legal representation that ensures no one falls through the cracks of a giant institution that was created to keep them out

Is there anything that can be done with executive order? If not these, anything else?

Right now our choice is clear. Will Biden or Trump be president starting in January 2025. The border and the asylum system are in crisis, and if this EO helps keep Joe in the WH, I accept the necessity of it. The blame is on the Republicans. What we need canโ€™t be done as long as Trump is holding the reins.

Qasim Rashid, Esq.'s avatar

So your argument is that the way Biden wins reelection is to be more like Trump? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and doesn't explain how restricting asylum and condemning people to persecution and death is right or moral.

jrose's avatar

Using EO as policy is problematic. It's what Trump does and it's not how things *should* work here. The problem is that nothing is working here. The bi-partisan bill failed. Asylum seekers should not be punished for the failure of our elected officials to do their jobs. That said, I have no answer for how we solve problems - the only solution is funding to better handle the number claims and process it all efficiently. But that has to come from Congress.

So, what do we do?

Eugene Tehansky's avatar

Thank you, very informative. May attract votes. May turn out to not be as bad as it sounds .

Lynne Jackier's avatar

Yes! Thank you for this. I was horrified to see the president's EO.

Besides all the points you make, I'm already struggling with the fact that my vote for Biden would make me even more complicit in the destruction and death in Gaza.

With this new abandonment of humane immigration policy, I'm disgusted that I have to choose between voting for him or allowing the takeover of the nation by authoritarian white Christian nationalism.
