I do not usually tell anyone what I donate, or to whom. The best charity is anonymous. But since it seems so important to you, $20 a mo is all i can afford. There are other organizations in desperate need and only so much to give. When I had more I gave more. Your local also needs volunteers. I do that also. And the numbers given out by the locals don't tell the whole story. Yes about 10% donate, but they depend upon the wealthy... where I am 2% pay most of intake. So we do depend greatly upon philanthropists to cover expenses. Hopefully the citizens will look to CPB/PBS/NPR as a news subscription and help their own communities.

I have been watching Stephen colbert for years. His quick wit, spontaneous pithy response to both political parties, government, and our presidenf ( a.k.a. The Tangerine Toddler) who provides him with an endless supply of material.

I cannot believe that this action is unrelated to the deal that Paramount has made with with the President. Rather than a failing on the part of Mr Colbert. To see his talent suppressed because of Government overreach is a slide towards an Authoritarian regime that is acting in violation ofMr Colbert’s first amendment right to Freedom of Speech.

I don't care. At all. And I hate the fascists. But this shit is unimportant. He will be fine. A podcast will feather his nest to the grave. You know what's important? Noticing how much you give a shit now that your telly man has been taken away. Maybe you could look up and hear the panicked shouts from blocks away, or the redevelopment and redlining of your places. Nah. Better to hang your hat on this issue.

The bad man took your comfort away, what now. Vote vote vote? They're here right now, and they've been there for more than a decade. In fact they've been there since before the articles of confederation. They were there when emitt till was murdered, and they were there when David Duke ran for governor. And you know who else was there? The liberals and democrats who acted as handmaidens, gave undue procedural fairness to termites in designing the house, and materially aided in the (not hypothetical) deaths of literally millions of your fellow countrymen. And THIS is what you hang your hat on?

There's a god damn genocide going on. The least you could do is pretend you give a shit beyond a fucking gamma ray tube.

Colbert gives people a reason to laugh. You think people do not or cannot care about multiple things at once?

Because other people can, and do. We're doing what we humanly can to cope with this situation into which we've been thrust, WHILE ALSO mourning the loss of an intelligently produced political humor program that MAKES US LAUGH WHILE WE THINK.

Laughter is healthy. So is thinking about more than one thing at a time.

Working oneself into a frenzy of obsession over things about which we, random people, largely can't control, is not healthy.

You should try letting yourself unwind for a little occasionally. Give yourself permission to laugh heartily at harmless absurdities, not hollowly and despairingly at big things that you, individually, can never affect or influence. Those things require collective action...for which the tide is already swelling.

I promise you that letting yourself laugh--REALLY laugh--will help your mental health, which seems fairly precarious by the tone of your comment. I'd ask if you're okay, but it's obvious that you're not.

Have a seat over here by me, and let's watch something funny for an hour or so, have some decent snacks and a beverage, and relax.

You'll probably feel anxious again afterward--it's pretty pervasive and pernicious these days--but you'll feel just a little rejuvenated again, too.

That's the value of comedians like Colbert. They find the absurdities in life and make us laugh for joy. Just for a little while.

We're taking a moment, most of us, to mourn the loss of a highly popular program that objectively helps our mental health, while also informing us.

Colbert will be all right. He'll adapt; he'll get or make a new show somewhere, and his fans will flock to him, and we'll be as all right again as we can be while we're engaged in the serious, difficult work of trying to save this country in a myriad of ways.

But let yourself *laugh* occasionally.

Even the people of Ukraine, writing their stories of survival and adaptation amidst the horrors continually wrought by Putin, are finding ways to laugh. Even they find pockets of joy.

Laughter and joy is soul-freeing. Laugh at absurdities and dance uninhibitedly once in awhile, like a child. Learn to dance while keeping your backpack of cares. But dance.

And laugh.

Unfortunately this is not new behavior for CBS. Recall in 1969 The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was canceled for political reasons during the Nixon Administration and instigated by him. Eventually the Smothers Brothers were rewarded monetary compensation but CBS fell in line with Nxon.

It's unfortunately not new to television. The Fourth Estate--particularly the television broadcast portion-has always required reminders of its real duty to the people: not to government.

Its brightest stars, its most astute investigative journalists, funniest comedians; its most diligent, unstoppable fact-checkers, seeking TRUTH, the reporters honestly reporting the facts--are almost always devalued by corporate minds with eyes inexorably fixated on the almighty dollar and the next merger.

Frankly, those shining stars should walk away and congregate in places like Substack. Their audiences WILL FOLLOW, like they've done with Jim Acosta (just as a fer-instance). Watch his interviews with Heather Cox Richardson. They're AMAZING. And inspiring. And unfiltered.

Independent journalism has deep roots in American culture.

We're seeing a resurgence. May it only grow.

The Fapweasel (Trump) is VERY thin skinned. He gets all bent out of shape if someone disagrees with him in the slightest. I think it is wrong for anyone to bow down to his spoiled brat temper tantrums. Costco stood up to him, and they are not as large or as old a company as CBS. Costco is also still in business, and not suffering one bit. The best way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him.

I don’t watch any television because it doesn’t have anything to say. It’s silly and I just can’t relate to any of it. It’s also very manipulative, and the ads are nothing but images that make you think you can be like that if you buy that shitty product. It’s not realistic. So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the news media also twists the facts to favor their own narrative. State television for sure.

Colbert is a gem! His wit is superior! I believe he will land on his feet!

Now, where do I find a lawyer to sue TACO for the mental anguish he has caused me?? Maybe a class-action suit on behalf of all of us Pro-Deocracy folks?
