It is interesting that you mention Bill Maher. I used to watch his show because he was funny and irreverent, and he usually had interesting guests. But I ended up thinking, wow, this guy is really an over-the-top Islamophobe. The only effect that had on me was to make me more curious about Islam, which is partly why I have subscribed to Islam Today (full disclosure: I am not religious, but I grew up in the US, immersed in a Christian dominated society).
He is a vehement anti-Muslim bigot, and worse, he refuses to engage with Muslims on these critical issues. He'll demonize us to no end, but will never have an actual Muslim academic on his show because he knows he'll get intellectually decimated. And that's bad for his ego.

Nigeria has more ph.d’s per capita than the United States. I’ve met some at conferences. Incredibly nice, intelligent people. They deserve so much better.

There are countries where christians are being subjected to mistreatment and harassment. But those are countries where christians is the minority, and in those contries muslims are treated worse. And most of those countries are not muslim majority countries.
One of those countries is Israel, where christians is being spat on for example. But muslims and especially palestinian or arabs in general is being treated as second rate citizens. Even inside what is called Israel.
Another country is India, christians is being physically attacked, beaten up. But also there, muslims are treated worse. They are treated as the socalled "dalit" caste. Hindu extremeists are doing literally what they want to them. Beating them up, burning their house, their belongings. Sexual assults, and killing them. Without any consequenses. Once in a blue moon the people responsible goes are arrested and later convicted. But then they are released by the authorities and celebrated.
To the people on the ground it appears to make no difference which religion one espouses. "Extremists rebels, people excluded from what passes for a stable economy" are intent on shifting that economy to benefit themselves. Are they egged on by the corporate honchos trying to clear the ground to take advantage of mineral and petro deposits? Would not be the first time - typical colonial tactic.
In the last 1500+ years, "Christians" have committed much of the atrocies & genocide in the world. The current regime turns a blind eye to the genocide of Gazans & wags the dog with a made up Christian genocide with no proof, pushing their Christo-fascist agenda.
