Today marks Juneteenth, a day to commemorate that moment in 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved Black Americans that they were finally free.
I'm subscribed to Phil Lewis substack, I think he can fit into that lineup you have already mentioned. Some historic, but mostly current news about and with black people and with black and minorities intrests in mind. (I hope I'm representing his writing correctly)
Not sure if my first attempt "took" or not but I'm trying to share an old blog piece I wrote about reparations and Affirmative Action. So, I'll try it again...
Thank you Qasim for this article. Here in SC we’re still fighting for a Hate Crime Bill to pass let alone believing for some sort of reparations. With a Republican supermajority, I’m not waiting with bated breath.
Thank you for this article. I believe in reparations. Evanston, Illinois (just north of Chicago) was one of the cities that made reparations a reality. We still need more laws that help Black Americans achieve true equality.
Thank you for this informative article! My family - as well as many Black families in the US - have always celebrated Juneteenth - which was usually on a weekend closest to the June 19th date, with BBQs. LOL Probably even more in my family, as my late mother and her family were Texans, with stories to share.
I have a habit of writing some things that seem negative to a lot of people. I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, but at my age, which is more than 70 years I have read, heard and witnessed the pain and my responses reflect those times. I do believe that when the people in this country, especially the white people read and realize what has happened to blacks all these years of lynching, burning down of communities built by blacks and government red lining. We were independent people.
Thank you so much for this piece, Qasim, & for naming several Substackers whose work we can support.
My all-time favorite Substack that I tell everyone to follow & pay for if they can, is one you mentioned here: History Can’t Hide by Kahlil Greene. More than any other content creator I know, Kahlil is committed to preserving & telling the truths of the ENTIRETY of American History, meaning the history that is actively being disappeared by the current administration - Black, Indigenous, immigrant, marginalized histories. Thank you for lifting up his & these others’ names.
You have given me a reason to believe in your desire to bring our cultures into the future, by acknowledging Juneteenth and explaining to all the cross we have had to bear. I believe we will and can cross bridge as one people in love. Thank you and God bless you.
The injustices to black people in this country are so appalling that it needed to be hidden from schoolbooks and curriculums. There remain battles today just to recognize rights spelled out in the Constitution of the U.S. And today, white Americans get to experience a tiny fraction of the denial of facts, having our voices silenced, being attacked for practicing our rights that are spelled out in the Constitution. Being threatened for being a member of our political party. Legal immigrants are being kidnapped by the government goons.(If you witness this…call 911 and report a kidnapping by masked men)
We have not experienced being hung (yet),tar & feathered, refused housing in areas we were looking to buy or rent. We have not been pulled over in our cars for suspicious pale skin activity. We have not had visitors to our homes suggesting we move, our children have not been denied access to a public swimming pool based on skin tone. We were not denied entry into school because of our color. I could go on but my point is, we should never allow injustices to black, brown, immigrant, refugee to be fought by them alone. There always have been upstanding white people who have literally stood and marched to oppose injustices for our communities among those treated unjustly. But that has to get bigger and stronger. Today is a very important holiday to recognize and to use for contemplation.

Explaining the necessary logic for equal rights to be protected.

SC has hope in Dr. Anne Andrews -- hopefully she can unseat Graham.
I donated to the GoFundMe for Adriana Smith’s family.
Thank you for doing so

“legality is not a measure of morality nor justice. It never has been. And it never should be.”

It's the best holiday (along with Labor Day).
Thank you for using your privilege to uphold justice. This is the way.
Thank you. 😄
