Let me respond to something I know a bit about Dr. Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed'd relation with Michigander Jews---I'm one of them, and not a kid-I'm 79---and of course voted for him, will do so again, and continue to contribute to his campaing. I will long remember his heart-felt response to the attempted synagogue in a Detroit burb and his constant insistence that all of God's children, no matter their faith or those of no faith, be treated with decency.
I use his full name deliberately, because it is a beautiful name. Just today Juan Cole, the great U Mich historian of the Arab and Muslim world, explained on his "Informed Comment" the meaning of the full name. It points to a virtuous life, much like Jews call "Tikkun Olam," to repair the world, which Abdul does every day.
He will be an extraordinary senator, the only one who not only has an MD, not only has run a large public health agency, and co-authored a popular book on medicare for all, but---as I learned from "Informed Comment"--is author or co-author of uncounted scholarly pieces, many in top public health journals
A horrid Islamophobic piece, full of attempts to make Jews fear Abdul, appeared in Jewish Insider, which previews what Abdul will face. It is full of lies and half-truths. There are 100,000 Jews in Michigan, it claims, and all of them should vote for Mike Rogers.
That is hardly truthful: both Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow (it comes from a famous epigram of the Jewish prophet Hillel, and ends with the phrase "if not not, when") endorsed Abdul. This comes after hundreds of Jewish students at UMich joined Arab and Muslim students in supporting Palestinian rights. It has come after Jewish commentators, including Omar Bartov, the dean of Holocaust studies, an Israeli-American professor at Brown University, who had served in the Israeli Army, called Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide; it misses the virtue of Orthodox Jew Peter Beinart, who is horrified at the genocide, and often has Arab and Muslim commentators on his substack. And Amy Goodman, who invited Abdul to appear on her "Democracy Today" earlier today, always reports the continuing IDF genocide, and tries to have Palestinian voices explain what they have experienced, on every broadcast.
There is every reason for our two faiths/ethnic groups to band together.The horrors of October 7 and the ensuing Israeli response has not only led to the complete destruction of Gaza, continued ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the bombing of Lebanon (again!), but to a huge upsurge of Islamophobia and at least an uptick of Antisemitism.
I would love to live long enough to vote for Abdul for President.
I hope in future interviews with Dr. El-Sayed you will tackle just one or two questions at a time and get into a policy detail and/or a strategy detail so we can hear specifics.
So he captured the MAGA rural vote by face to face interaction. He spoke with integrity and no lies. They heard the difference. Hallie Shoffner is doing the same thing against tom cotton. I hope people here in Arkansas can tell the difference. Great interview.
