As I have gotten older, it’s amazing finding out the truth about this country. And isn’t Prager U, (NOT a real school) still trying to whitewash this country’s history? Some school districts have chosen to utilize there cutesy videos as a supplement to their curriculum. I’m so grateful for the descendants of the original inhabitants of this land who know the truth and can still share the true history especially about Thanksgiving.
The one thing he was relatively good at was being a mariner. Other than that, he shared the common prejudices of his era. He kidnapped several of the natives he found to show them off at the Court.
He also wanted to bring on the end of the world, similar to today’s accelerationists. Fill the Spanish coffers, use the money to smash out Jerusalem and bring on the return of Christ.
Even IF Columbus were none of the things he was, he didn't "discover" the United States, so why he is honored as representative of the US is beyond me.
The Supreme Court has already shown what it thinks of indigenous people. They denied an appeal by the Apache nation to halt the selling of timber in national parks where they have religious sites. Religion is protected for white people, not those of other colors or ethnicities.
I taught this version of Columbus to my 5th graders, as well as an authentic, age appropriate version of black history. And unlike those who say it harms children to know the truth, or that it will somehow make them hate America, I am here to tell them that it had the exact opposite effect. Not only were my students totally engaged, they also wanted to know what they could do to help right the wrongs and to make sure things like what they had learned would never happen again. Which lead right into introductory 5th grade civics! So yes, when the far right wants to brand REAL history as ‘woke’ nonsense, they don’t actually want an informed citizenry, because then their agenda is doomed.
As a historian of the Renaissance, I believe that it is important to note that the real reason that Ferdinand sent Columbus on his voyage is contained in the mistaken term that we still use for native Americans—‘Indian’. The purpose was financial—India was the source of the spices, sugar, and silk that were the most lucrative goods of the time and Spain had to find a Western route to get there because Pope Alexander VI had forbidden them to take the eastern route around Africa discovered by the Portuguese in order to keep peace between the two. The Portuguese were vacuuming up all of that trade and the Spanish were intent on finding a Western route to grab some of it. Columbus was sent to India and when he encountered a land mass he thought that he had arrived there.
As a small footnote: the Norse founded a settlement in Newfoundland in the tenth century but it didn’t last. Archaeological digs have uncovered the remains of the settlement.
i so prefer celebrating Indigenous People's day. I wish people would let Columbus go. He must have been a good ship's captain, but unfortunately a terrible human being... I'd love to focus on the many varied people who lived here, loved & cared for this beautiful land long before it became the United States of America... There's a wealth of knowledge & stories we're missing out on...
I'm so sorry, Eileen. That is a form of trauma that perpetuates to this day, that we absolutely need to recognize and make amends for. Doing what I can one day at a time. Thank you for your strength and resilience.
Having this experience growing up made me empathetic. I dedicated my career to supporting and helping young people of color realize their education and career dreams. So it was a blessing.
Earlier today I advocated for S 1915/HR 3609 - The Remove The Stain Act, which would rescind the Wounded Knee Medals of Honor. Hegseth has decided they're important, so I also felt like I was thumbing my nose at him!
I think the rewriting of Columbus is a subset of the entire rewriting of ~1492 through ~ 1704 (Blenham) paid for by a lot of Tudor/SaxGoth/Windsor money. Spain was erased from the full quarter of 5 centuries that they dominated by the winners. Columbus was one detail. And notice the Aztecs never sued the Spanish for reparations, and you know why. Yes, that quote and his diary entry say it all.

Well written!!! Thank you!

Thank you for this. Being a small part American Indian it is greatly appreciated. Facts matter.

Columbus didn't know where he was going. When he arrived he didn't know where he was. He did it with someone else's money, just like tRump.

The history I was taught as a young person was mostly lies. That history made me hate myself for being brown and being indigenous.

Thank you for this. As someone who has “sangre Indio” it is much appreciated. And, I just love Pop. He’s convicted and unafraid.
TODAY COLUMBUS WOULD BE IN DRUMPFS CABINET.

Such a disgrace Hegseth is.
