If the Supreme Court thinks that the police have no duty to protect civilians from harm then the very purpose of their existence should be called into question.
As a Brit and a lawyer I am flummoxed by this. As seems so often with such cases there were many opportunities to avoid this tragic death but none of them were taken. Of course when there is so little chance of being in any way penalised for shooting someone like this why bother? The system positively encourages such incidents.
Also… millions of Americans have guns. Legally. Someone banging on my door will be met with a gun. Police should EXPECT a gun to greet them. This man never RAISED his gun. His arm was down, gun facing the floor when officer executed him. (Firing 6 shots is execution intent.)
Such a death as described here is totally beyond understanding, to say the least. And I'm curious about the person on the other end of the FACETIME phone call. Could that person be considered a witness?

First, why didn’t the officer tell him to drop the gun? Second, why do they shoot to kill? There is no excuse for what happened to that man!
