Democratic Party leadership needs to reckon with its inability to understand when it is time to step aside—because this model is enabling the collapse of our democracy
It is amazing how its not about ageism or political philosophy. It's about passing the torch. Hmm. Imagine if you made similar arguments about race putting people in for color not qualifications, or religion, or gender identity...
Ageism is acceptable. Anti Semitism is acceptable. So long as the. "right" ideology prevails.
The no-term-limit in SCOTUS is a setup for failure. In Congress, placing new democratic members in charge of the committees is an absolutely necessary change. The inability to elevate new voices, share expertise creates the real malaise felt about the Democratic Party. We need more Truth Tellers, not career politicians, come do a good job, even if it's for one term. Instead, just stay like potted plants. And if anything, I learned it's done out of laurels on these people's heads, trust needs verification. Look closely at WHO voted for Kushner.
The temporary ranking member is now a old white man age 70. Not the vice ranking member Jasmine Crockett which according to prior situations like this is the norm.
I’m done with democrats
I’m going for Working Families Party they get it and they understand the moment we are in
Democratic Party is dead because of capitulation to a white supremacist system with the use of capitalism at the forefront of it
I am 72, no spring chicken. Change is real hard for many people my age. Heck, probably any age. Today’s world is so much different, even outside of politics, than 30 or 40 years ago. My children give me as much valuable advice as I give them, which was not the case when I was their age and my parents were alive. I was never asked for advice then. It seems to me, that the Democratic party is like my parent’s generation, and I want it to be more like my children’s. We need a few people, my age who get and accept the change, but have lived long enough to have good insight, like Bernie Sanders, with many younger, energetic, smart people, like Crockett, AOC, Booker and Murphy, who realize the way things are always done does NOT work in the 21st century. I am looking at you Chuck Schumer!
This important observation and analysis needed to be said as clearly as you just explained it Mr. Rashid…and with the many relevant examples that you used as apt illustration of your point.
Yes, by all means, let’s continue to stand in a circle and shoot AT each other. And that’s not to say I disagree that we need to “unleash” the great politicians (and those are not mutually exclusive terms) we have: AOC, Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost and Mallory McMorrow among them.
I’m in the geezer class- been voting for over 50 years now. I am willing to step aside, welcome and encourage the FUTURE, but don’t try to push me completely off the road into the culvert- I WON’T GO!!
When our Democratic leaders willfully leave their positions, it leaves a very real, exploitable hole in the Judiciary, when what we need are people who will HOLD THE FREAKING LINE! It's why we got Amy Barrett and consequentially, saw ROE v Wade overturned.
The examples you gave of RBG, Feinstein and even Amy Coney Barrett attest to this - granted, those seats were vacated because of the deaths of our greatest legacies and enabled Barrett to fill it. Wasn't that some congressional calisthenics from McConnell...?!
Aside from the obvious difference, the vacancies are the issue and not HOW they left. As we saw with Barrett's assention to SCOTUS, the MAGA minions will twist, squeeze and reinterpret longstanding constitutional laws, just to manipulate their way into any vacant seat - which wouldn't be possible without the vacancy.
This is excellent, and your analysis makes me have the tiniest shred of hope for the dems if more would, like you, reckon with their poor legacy of cronyism, egoism, and now...
As my Dad always told me, “Everyone is replaceable.” That advice kept me on my toes throughout my career years. Turning that around, I realized that I couldn’t rise in the company without having a replacement.
There are few careers where you need to stay until you die. Most employers would discover that employees become stale. Fresh faces are essential to keeping your business up-to-date. Fresh ideas and fresh talents can be part of a solid growth plan.
Congress has gotten stuck in the “experience means wisdom” and “I’ve got to work my way up into a more powerful committee.” The problem is we have octagerians with one foot in the check-out zone. The world changes rapidly, and youth brings different skills and knowledge. I’ll never forget the elderly congressman thinking that the Internet is a long series of connecting tubes! He certainly wasn’t prepared to make decisions about Social Media, online voting, and the mental health concerns of children being online.
The “antiquated” manners in Congress don’t fly anymore. A sternly worded letter with eight strong questions to the president is like putting your pinky out when you drink tea # all for show.
So well stated. Thank you. I would only add tgat I believe the Founders would be horrified at people making g a career of Congress and other elected positions. I do not think the Founders were perfect but on this I think they had the right idea.
It's painful, but it's the truth. Hand over the power to our smart, passionate young men and women. If they need you, mentor them. I don't know any Dems who disagree.

We in Australia have retirement ages for judges and politicians, a sensible thing to do. We need young people to run the country and be in the courts!

Excellent article and totally agree!
Truer words were never spoken.

Move on (and forward).

You are exactly right, it’s like hey set themselves up for failure.
The truth, eloquently stated💯‼️🎯

Thanks for again speaking truth.
Thank you Sarah

Agree. Jefferson even wanted a new constitution every 19 years
