Let me back up for a moment.

Anyone who follows my work knows my commitment to universal human rights is absolute. Whether its in countering the systemic violence men are committing against women, the anti-immigrant rhetoric dominating our political discourse, the cruel and backwards ~600 anti-LGBTQ pieces of legislation proposed in the last year alone, the systemic racial injustices in our criminal justice system targeting Black and brown communities, or combatting the hatred towards Jewish and Muslim communities—I do not mince words when calling out these injustices.

Human rights do not come with an asterisk.

Recently my friend Stuart took an opportunity to address his congregation at his Synagogue on the topic of Israel and Palestine. I share his example not as an isolated circumstance, but of a narrative I’ve seen repeatedly from Jewish voices standing up against the injustices of the Israeli government. But, sadly, a narrative denied in corporate media too often. Unfortunately, messages of unity don’t drive clicks.

I’m here to help change that.

So, I requested Stuart’s permission to share his remarks above, because I believe more people need to hear him. Stuart shares the pain and suffering imposed upon Jews in the Holocaust, and draw parallels to Palestinian pain and suffering in Gaza. He does so not to ‘compare scars,’ but to exemplify the shared humanity we all have—Jewish or Palestinian, Black, brown, or white. His words come from a place of deep pain and deep love of all humanity. His remarks are full of pain, but also of hope. They’re a reminder of humanity in an inhumane time, and a lesson for anyone willing to listen. And this is why I hope you take a moment to listen.

We can do better as humanity. We must be better as humanity. And we will do better as humanity—as long as we stand up for one another regardless of faith, color, or creed.

Returning to my comment about what it means to be ‘normal’ this day in age. Here’s the thing—the “norms” of society is what has gotten us into this mess. The norms of access journalism. The norms of throwing some marginalized community under the bus for political or media gain. The normals of transactional humanity.

To hell with these dehumanizing norms.

It is far past time to discard those destructive norms, and instead build a new unapologetic vision of universal human rights. One in which no community is left behind, and every person’s inherent humanity is cherished and protected. And that new normal is what Stuart exemplifies with his comments and leadership. So yes, he is not normal by what is currently accepted as normal—because he demands that new vision of unapologetic universal humanity. Indeed, none of us should allow the current normalization of the atrocities we’re witnessing in real time.

As a final thought, I often think about this fact: Islam and Judaism both share the beautiful teaching that “to save one life is to save all humanity.” What a beautiful and unifying message. My gratitude to Stuart for courageously speaking up as a Jewish person for his Palestinian siblings in humanity. Leadership matters, and Stuart exemplifies it every single day. May we continue the journey to collectively speak up for all humanity without any asterisks—as that is the truest path to save all humanity.

This week ICE fascists shot a father in front of his five-year-old son. The child was fortunately unharmed, physically. Yet, despite Mayor Mamdani’s efforts to secure his release, Donald Trump and Markwayne Mullins effectively kidnapped the man they shot and took him into custody. The Trump regime is doing everything possible to target immigrants, increase fear, and fabricate excuses to deploy ICE fascists on immigrants and on U.S. born citizens.

As an immigrant myself, and as someone fortunate to work as a human rights lawyer, this anti-immigrant hate strikes to my core. In this piece I provide guidance on how to protect your rights when ICE tries to strip them away, and I provide clear action items on how you can work to protect immigrant rights. As I’ve said before, I cannot do this alone—I need your partnership. I am grateful for your trust to stand united against fascism. Let’s Address This.

We will continue to show up and speak our truth as is our Constitutional right, and as is our neighborly duty to every person in this country. Now, let’s dive into what you should know if you are stopped by ICE.

Part 1: Answering FAQs

Here are answers to four of the most common questions I’ve received on how to protect yourself during these ICE raids. ICE is short for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Feel free to post additional questions in the comments and I will do my best to answer them, or direct you to the right resource.

1. In light of ICE raids, should I send my child to school?

Student and child safety is of paramount importance. Trump is sending his cronies into schools, while lying about who they are, and refusing to show ID—all to literally kidnap children and deport them. This is absolutely fascism. So what do we do?

1. Call your local board of education and teacher’s union now to understand what steps they are taking to protect your children, and how you can be involved.

2. Demand your city council break any agreements with ICE, including what is commonly known as 287(g) agreements. Instead, ensure this remains a local matter, not a Federal matter (more on this below).

3. This cannot only be an action taken by immigrant parents. I especially ask those who are US citizens or do not have undocumented children to stand firm as an ally—contact your local board of education and teacher’s union and ask them how you can get involved.

2. What do I do if I am stopped by ICE?

If stopped by an ICE agent, do your best to remain calm. And while the following information is not official legal advice (mandatory disclaimer), this is what I would do myself, and have advised my legal clients to do:

1. Have memorized your A number, phone number of your lawyer, and of your family.

2. Do not speak to ICE agents without your lawyer present. If you are asked to speak, give testimony, or sign any document—exercise your right to remain silent.

3. Do not lie or give false documents or false statements. Know that ICE agents are allowed to lie to you to get you to speak. You are not allowed to lie to ICE agents. You will not outsmart them, nor will it do you any good to lie to them. Stay silent.

4. If an ICE agent appears your door, you do not have to allow them to enter your home unless they have a criminal search warrant signed by a judge. You are completely within your rights to turn them away, or refuse to open the door, if they do not provide you a signed warrant.

5. Know the difference between an ICE detainer and a judicial warrant. Only a judicial warrant allows for someone’s arrest. An ICE detainer is a self-created document that ICE uses to give the perception of legitimacy. An ICE detainer is as valid as a stained napkin, and belongs in the garbage can just like said napkin. If an ICE fascist shows up with an ICE detainer, you are not under any legal obligation to go with them. Only if they show up with a judicial warrant are you legally required to go with them. Regardless, do not speak to ICE for any reason.

In short, the only words you should say to ICE agents are to ask if they have a judicial warrant for your arrest. If they do not, send them on their way. If they do, then request to speak with your lawyer and say no more to ICE. Citizen or not, documented immigrant or not—your documentation status does not restrict your right to speak to a lawyer. Exercise your rights.

3. Should I call local police for help?

Calling your local police to stop ICE officers is not necessarily a great idea. Certain jurisdictions have what are known as 287g agreements, which means local police are working for ICE. Thus, in such a situation, calling your local police potentially obliges them to arrest you on behalf of ICE. If you have questions or concerns on how to respond to ICE agents, call your lawyer, and let your lawyer speak on your behalf. As promised, more on 287g agreements below.

4. What If I do not have a lawyer?

It is advisable to reach out to lawyers ahead of time in case you need to call them in an emergency. You can (and need to be) fully transparent with your lawyer about your immigration status. They will only be able to assist you if they have all the information needed at hand. If English is not your preferred language, most law firms have lawyers that can speak multiple languages, or have access to translators.

If you are arrested and cannot afford a lawyer, ask for a public defender. Especially if you are being charged with a crime, wait for your public defender. And to repeat yet again, no matter what, do not speak to law enforcement without a lawyer present.

Part 2: How U.S. Citizens can help protect immigrants and immigrant communities

We are not helpless. Truth requires courage. And I encourage everyone to take action. Some of the seven action items below have immediate effect and others take time. I ask you to engage in both types of calls to action. We must act quickly to protect our immigrant neighbors now, and build capacity to change fascist policy in the future.

1. Activate

Get involved in your local politics. Whether it is your local school board, your local city council, your local teacher’s union, or your local immigrant rights organization—get involved. Show up to the next meeting, meet your local elected officials, and understand the local issues impacting your community. Google is your friend in finding a local calendar of events. Use it. All politics is local, and it is critical you get involved locally.

2. Communicate

Contact your member of Congress (find them here) and relentlessly remind them that you do not support mass deportations or ICE raids. Instead, you do support due process of law, a humane immigration policy, and equal rights for immigrants. Ensure they hear your outrage as much as possible. They have to document how many times they are called and on what subject, so ensure they know a just immigration system matters to you.

3. Invest

Invest your time and your money into the people and organizations doing the front line work. If you have time to volunteer, make phone calls, knock doors, and sign petitions, do so. If you have the financial resources to donate to organizations working to protect our democracy, please do so. Start by donating to your local immigration rights orgs.

4. Educate

It is critical we remain informed on the key issues, by educating ourselves and those around us. As corporate media sadly continues to capitulate to fascism, support writers and human rights lawyers working to stop fascism in America (e.g. like yours truly). Read the work of non-profit media like ProPublica, The Appeal, and more. We may not have the billions of dollars in dark money from corporate autocrats, but we have strength in numbers and your support makes that difference.

5. Organize

Bring friends with you. You are the best ambassador for justice in your friend group—lead by example. I myself contacted a lawyer friend (Rachel Cohen) to attend an anti-ICE protest, and I’ve since pulled several people with me to attend. Grab even one friend and drag them with you to the next school board meeting, city council session, or town hall in your local community. We need to build organizational capacity, and means each one reaches one to get involved. (And when your friend comes to the second meeting, it is their opportunity to reach one more and bring them with).

6. Sanctuary Locations

During the previous Trump regime, some 800 or more churches, synagogues, and other houses of worship established themselves as sanctuary locations for immigrants. These are locations that invited immigrants who feared deportation to remain within their walls for housing, food, and safety. To be clear, these sanctuary locations have no particular legal authority, and ICE agents can still procure a warrant to search sanctuary locations and arrest anyone a judge has authorized for arrest.

However, these sanctuary locations served as another line of protection for those fearing such raids. These locations forced ICE to have to make the decision of whether they want to violently raid a house of worship. And given the passing of the Laken Riley Act, which allows authorities to arrest and deport immigrants on the mere accusation of a crime—including petty and non-violent crimes like shoplifting—sanctuary locations may be a source to help protect innocent people.

Unfortunately, ICE fascists have demonstrated they have no regard for sensitive locations, and are kidnapping people from hospitals, schools, shelters, even while at their immigration hearings at court. Thus, it is critical you stay alert, and if your status is not secure, contact a lawyer to rectify your paperwork immediately.

7. Repeal 287g Agreements

Earlier I promised I’d discuss this in more detail. Here’s the background on how 287g agreements work—and why we must repeal them. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 added Section 287(g) to the Immigration and Nationality Act. This authorized ICE to force state and local police to do what ICE wants them to do—in this case, round up immigrants.

In other words, 287g agreements allow federal ICE officers to require local and state police officers to work for them. These agreements are why it’s incredibly risky to call local police on immigration issues. And it is a devastating policy for several reasons:

• It pulls local human resources for local needs and forces them to do federal work.

• It puts women suffering abuse at risk. If an undocumented woman is suffering abuse, her abuser knows that she cannot go to law enforcement without fear of deportation, separation from her children, or permanent detention. Thus, 287g agreements perpetuate the cycle of abuse countless women already face.

• There’s no evidence this agreement makes us safer. In fact, a detailed study by the National Institute of Justice across 167 counties that enforce 287g agreements, “found no evidence that 287(g) arrangements were linked to meaningful crime reduction.”

• On the contrary, there have been hundreds and hundreds of reported cases of sexual abuse committed by ICE agents in detention facilities, and few of them are ever investigated or resolved. To ask ICE to round up immigrants, while ICE itself has a documented history of epidemic sexual abuse, is the height of absurdity and hypocrisy.

Currently, ICE has some form of a 287g agreement with now more than 1,000 police agencies across nearly all 50 states—which I have uploaded here for your convenience. This number has dramatically increased. When Trump’s term started, there were roughly 250 such agreements across 25 states. Now, there are 1067 such agreements with local police, and 60 pending 287g agreements. Only six states have banned 287g agreements (Washington, Oregon, California, Illinois, New Jersey, and Connecticut). Only one state has no active 287g agreements (Vermont). Every other state has active 287g agreements, and that is where we must get to work to repeal them.

How To Repeal 287g Agreements

These are local agreements, and can be repealed on the local level. Here’s the key call to action—287g agreements cannot go into effect until local government approves their enforcement. That means, if your locality has a 287g agreement in place, it is because your local elected officials voted for it. Therefore, they can be repealed with that same local authority. And that local authority will only act to repeal these abusive agreements if local citizens activate, organize, and invest in that change. So, if you live in one of the states or localities listed above, advocate to your city council, mayor, or relevant governing authority to repeal this harmful agreement and instead uphold meaningful justice. Show up to your next city council meeting, contact your mayor and police chief, and demand their repeal.

And if you do not live in such a locality, you can still petition your local government to pass ordinances to protect immigrants from abusive federal enforcement.

In Conclusion

Trump’s anti-immigrant raids are hurting the American people, the U.S. economy, and betrays our constitutional right to equal justice and due process. No one is claiming that the U.S. immigration system is perfect. However, the facts are clear—immigrants make our country safer, healthier, and stronger economically. Rather than falling for political propaganda that demonizes immigrants, we should focus on meaningful immigration reform that maximizes public safety, economic growth, and public health.

My immense gratitude to those who are investing their time, money, and efforts to uphold meaningful justice in America, including for immigrant communities. Do not lose hope. Instead, double down your efforts. Be relentless. In standing united, we can build a fairer, more just, and more effective immigration system that continues to advance American growth and success.

Below is a deeply personal piece as I process these last three years. It is an angry piece. But I feel it’s important we document the reality of what we collectively witnessed, and continue to witness. We cannot let history be whitewashed. I will always maintain hope for the future, and that hope is grounded in understanding the current reality, honestly acknowledging how we arrived at a place of genocide, and recognizing the work that remains.

On October 25, 2023, while commenting on a video of the carnage Israel had already inflicted upon Palestinian civilians, Egyptian writer and activist Omar El Akkad wrote, “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.”

Now, some three years later, as Palestinians cling to a fragile ceasefire—one that should have been enacted on October 9, 2023, when Hamas offered to release all hostages on the single condition that Israel not enter Gaza—a condition that Israel rejected—I think about Omar’s words.

I think about the October 6, 2023 headline which read, “2023 is deadliest year for Palestinian children say human rights groups,” citing the dozens of children murdered by the Israeli military. I think about the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian lives that could have been saved since October 7, of the hundreds of Israeli lives that would have been saved, of the generations of Palestinians wiped from the Earth in a cruel, calloused, calculated genocide. I think about how even despite the alleged ceasefire, Netanyahu and Israel have killed more than 1000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza with impunity and with zero accountability.

And I think about all the people in power who chose to remain silent. The politicians, Republicans and Democrats, who continued to fund Netanyahu, even after the ICJ asserted charges. Even after the ICC issued a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest. Even after the UN confirmed Israel is committing genocide. Even after Israeli human rights organizations reported that their government is committing genocide. Even after global scholars of genocide overwhelmingly confirmed Israel is committing genocide. Even after Jewish and Israeli scholars confirmed Israel is committing genocide.

I think about the failures of President Biden. The cruelty of Donald Trump. The apathy of members of Congress, like my own Democratic Congressman Bill Foster, who refused to find a spine and call for so much as a ceasefire, while the funding bills he voted for continued to arm Netanyahu to kill one Palestinian child every hour of every day for the last two years straight.

That blood will permanently stain his hands. Please know that, Bill Foster. Long after you’re gone, your legacy will be that of a feckless small man who helped enable genocide.

I think about all the City Councils I spoke before, begging them to call for a ceasefire, to divest from Israeli businesses. I cited the rich examples of City Councils divesting from apartheid South Africa, to stop funding genocide—only for them to refuse to so much as take a vote. I think about the state senators and delegates who I pleaded with, but who instead pretended this genocide was not in their purview, even as states like Illinois bought tens of millions of Israeli Treasury bonds to help continue funding genocide.

I think about the politicians who profess to oppose Trump and his fascism, while proudly standing with Netanyahu in photo ops, voting for war funding, and going on media tours to excuse and whitewash his genocide.

I think about the major media outlets who claim they’re reporting “truth” and “facts” and are “unbought,” yet on this issue of genocide, they either refused to acknowledge its reality, or whitewashed it as made up. I think about their silence as the Israeli military killed up to 300 Palestinian journalists in Gaza, while banning all international media, and refusing to allow any independent reporting whatsoever.

I think about the Presidents and CEOs of big tech, big banks, and major universities, who deemed it too political to condemn genocide, even as they actively supported the Israeli military with intel and data gathering, actively suppressed content calling out genocide, and actively terminated employees and expelled students who spoke up against genocide. Indeed, while Cornell ‘punished’ five men with forced apology letters for credible accusations of drugging and raping a woman, they expelled four students for peacefully protesting genocide.

I think about each and every single person entrusted with power who remained silent during these past three years of genocide, and I have only one thing to ask you.

Was it worth it?

Was it worth it to know that now, this is how history will remember you?

In the future, your children and descendants look back to see how you responded to this genocide, the way we look back at the Holocaust, and they will find nothing but your silence. They’ll hear of your accomplishments to win a seat in office, to break a glass ceiling, to achieve exemplary corporate growth—but wonder how you remained silent on the most horrific moral atrocity of our time? They’ll sit stunned at how you looked away from genocide every day, and dared look at yourself in the mirror every night. They’ll wonder how they’re supposed to remember you, knowing your cowardice, not your courage, was your most dominant characteristic.

Are you happy with your silence?

Are you happy to know that future historians will study this moment in time, and relive your silence with horror and shock?

To know that even as children were burned alive by 2000 pound bombs dropped on them as they hid in flimsy tents, you saw the videos on your phone and simply scrolled by. To know that doctors had to perform cesarian sections on mothers—on the street and without anesthesia—because the Israeli military blocked basic medical aid, but you pretended that your feminism didn’t apply? To know that as Gaza became the global center of child amputees, and that by April 2024 more bombs were dropped on Gaza than the combined bomb tonnage dropped on Dresden, Hamburg, and London in World War II—but you pretended your advocacy for children stopped at your district’s borders? To know that more journalists were killed in just the first two years in Gaza than were killed in 27 years of Vietnam and World War 2 combined—but your free speech advocacy stopped at Jimmy Kimmel?

Do you regret your complicity?

Was your precious little political office worth it? Your eight figure CEO salary? The VC fund bonus for your silence? The University President position for punishing students who spoke out? Was the fleeting praise from people who boosted your ego because it got them access to you worth it? Was selling your soul for perceived personal gain while more than 100,000 Palestinians civilians were murdered in schools and hospitals, homes and shelters, mosques and churches, libraries and town squares, worth it? And will you finally now raise your voice to demand an end to Israeli apartheid? An end to anti-BDS legislation? An end to a policy of denying Palestinian statehood? And a prosecution of those who committed genocide and war crimes?

Or will your silence continue to dominate you?

If there’s one lesson we’ve learned over the last two years is that our world needs new leaders. Our country, our states, and our cities, need new leaders. New teachers, new public servants, new voices in media, new activists for human rights—those with the courage to uphold justice above all else.

Because here’s the truth for our current leaders, whose silence conquered their conscience. Whatever you rationalize. However you convinced yourself that your silence was worth it, I can promise you this—it won’t stand the test of time.

It will eat at you. It will creep into your conscience. It will gnaw at your soul. Maybe not today. Maybe not even next year. But one day, perhaps many decades from now as you prepare to meet your Maker, you’ll think back to this moment in time. You’ll wish you could come back. You’ll condemn yourself for not speaking up, for not speaking out, for not clearing the incredibly low bar of opposing genocide. And maybe, you will come to that realization while you still have life in your veins. Maybe one day, many years into the future, you’ll join a Palestinian Holocaust remembrance event, and you’ll muster the courage to finally speak up.

Maybe one day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, you will have always been against this.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but I’m sharing it with you to warn about the impending threat of Shakira law on Americans. And while I can promise I personally will never push Shakira law on Americans, especially in our schools, the fact is, hips don’t lie.

Also, at least he wished me a pleasant Father’s Day.

In all seriousness, as I wrote last year, with the election win of Zohran Mamdani, anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia is skyrocketing. If you’ve turned on your television or seen any political ads from the right, you have no doubt heard about the “dangers” of “Shariah Law.” Apparently, it is taking over, will enslave us all, and pretty soon we’ll be the United States of Islamerica. (Came up with that on my own, you’re welcome).

Except, this is all nonsense, peddled by political opportunists to divide, distract, demonize, and dehumanize. To arm you with the knowledge to wage an intellectual Jihad of the Pen against that fear mongering and disinformation, I’ve written this piece below on what Shariah is, and is not. I hope you use this information to combat the hate you’re seeing online, in your city council meetings, and when engaging with your elected officials. As always, I welcome your questions in the comments.

Let’s Address This.

1. What does Shariah mean?

First, let’s start with the basics. The general meaning of the word “shariah” is “law.” So when you hear people scream “Shariah Law” they’re screaming Law Law. It’s like chai tea or naan bread. And while naan is delicious, screaming “Shariah Law” is nonsense and speaks to the ignorance abounding.

The proper usage of the term is to say “Islamic Shariah.” You could just as easily say Christian Shariah or Jewish Shariah (more on that below).

Islamic Shariah is the law of the Qur’an and the word shariah literally means “A path to life giving water.” In fact, the word Yarrah (i.e. the root of the Hebrew word Torah) means precisely the same thing. Therefore, the concept of Shariah is actually ingrained in Abrahamic tradition. Now, Shariah is comprised of five main branches, and it’s the fifth branch that right wing provocateurs are up in arms about (though I doubt they even know that Islamic Shariah is comprised of five main branches). In any case, these branches are as follows:

1. adab (behavior, morals and manners)

2. ibadah (ritual worship)

3. i’tiqadat (beliefs)

4. mu’amalat (transactions and contracts), and

5. ‘uqubat (punishments).

These branches combine to create a society based on justice, pluralism and equity for every member of that society. Does this mean Islamic theocracy? Categorically no. Islamic Shariah forbids that it be imposed on any person. Islam’s founder, Prophet Muhammad (sa), demonstrated that Shariah may only be applied if people willingly apply it to themselves—never through forced government implementation. Thus Islamic Shariah specifically rejects theocracy. In fact, when Prophet Muhammad (sa) migrated to Medina and built an alliance with the many Jewish tribes of Medina, he was unanimously decided as the Head of State of Medina. If Islam mandated, or even taught, theocratic rule, this was the moment when to implement an Islamic theocracy. Instead, he drafted the Charter of Medina, a secular governing constitution that established separation of religion and state, condemned antisemitism in clear terms, and recognized the equality in rights, humanity, and protections of Jews, Muslims, and all people residing in Medina.

Side Note: What does the “sa” after Muhammad (sa) mean? I explain here.

Thus, history records that in his very first opportunity to secure worldly power, the Prophet Muhammad (sa) instead held himself subservient to a secular constitution and rejected theocratic rule. A decade later Prophet Muhammad (sa) would again achieve even greater power in Mecca, and history attests to his just and magnanimous response then. (More on that shortly).

Additionally, the Qur’an does not promote any specific form of government, but requires that the form people choose must be based on adl or “absolute justice.” The Qur’an says, “Verily, Allah enjoins justice, and the doing of good to others; and giving like kindred; and forbids indecency and manifest evil and transgression. He admonishes you that you may take heed“ (16:91). Notice, religious preference is never mentioned. Likewise the Qur’an declares, “Verily, Allah commands you to make over the trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between men, you judge with justice.” (4:59). Again, while specifically citing entrusting people with power, i.e. leadership, and judging people on their actions—the standard provided is not a religious standard, but the secular standard of absolute justice. The Qur’an repeats this theme throughout the entire book, all while contrasting with the declaration, “There shall be no compulsion in religion.” (2:257). And, “‘For you your religion, and for me my religion.’” (109:7). And many more like this. The Qur’an could not be more clear that its religious teachings are a personal moral standard, and the public law of the land must be built on secular governance and absolute justice.

This principle transcends religion, time, and place. Therefore, for example, in ruling with absolute justice, the righteous Jewish King Solomon ruled as a just monarch based on this fundamental principle of Islamic Shariah—justice. The United States Constitution, written largely by deists, calls for equal justice under the law for all people in this country, regardless of faith, color, creed, or status—again based on this fundamental principle of Islamic Shariah—justice.

Finally, right wing provocateurs cite the ‘uqubat (punishments) branch of Islamic shariah to paint an often horrifying picture of what will happen “once shariah takes over.” Horrid descriptions of stoning for adultery, death for apostasy, and bans on speech. Notwithstanding that each of these injustices are categorically condemned in Islamic teaching, whatever the ‘uqubat (punishments) branch of Islamic shariah teaches—none of them would ever apply in the United States. Why? For two simple reasons that I will repeat again and again. One, Islam condemns theocracy and its teachings can never be imposed on any person. And two, the United States Constitution has the Supremacy Clause which ensures its laws on public discourse and accountability remain the supreme law of the land, forever and always.

Again, when Prophet Muhammad (sa) was the Head of State of Medina, he refused to enforce Islamic teachings on the residents of Medina, and instead established the Charter of Medina. This is history. This is fact. This is the separation of religion and state that Islam mandates.

2. Do Muslims want Shariah to rule America?

The next claim we constantly hear is that Americans who are Muslim are running for office and getting elected to “enforce Shariah Law.”

This is patently false.

Americans who are Muslim are running as civically engaged citizens, taking a sworn oath to uphold the US Constitution, and delivering for the American people writ large.

Remember, the Qur’an teaches that religion must not be a matter of the state. Shariah is a person’s personal relationship with God. Prophet Muhammad (sa), even as the de facto ruler of Medina, ratified the Charter of Medina in which Muslims were held to Shariah, and Jews to the Law of the Torah. Not a single non-Muslim was held to Shariah because Shariah itself forbids compulsion. Again, the Qur’an clearly says, “There is no compulsion in religion“ (2:257).

Furthermore, Islamic Shariah obliges Muslims to be loyal to their nation of residence and specifically condemns creating disruption and discord or violating the laws of the land. Therefore, American Muslims must adhere to the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land—exactly as the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution requires.

3. If Muslims don’t want Shariah to rule the United States, then so what if it’s banned?

Because doing so would violate the US Constitution, and would furthermore put all Americans of faith at risk. In fact, banning any religion would hasten fascism in the United States, and that’s something every person in this country should find repulsive.

First, remember that Islamic Shariah is a personal relationship between a Muslim and God. The First Amendment forbids Congress from passing laws that restrict the free exercise of religion—particularly private exercise. Flat out banning Islam or banning Americans from the private practice of Islam would be a direct violation of our First Amendment

Second, if Shariah was banned, then what exactly are we banning? It would mean that Americans who are Muslim could not marry, inherit, write wills or choose to divorce per Islamic guidelines. Islamic Shariah teaches Muslims not to drink alcohol or eat pork. Would banning Islamic Shariah force us to now drink alcohol or eat pork? See how ridiculous this thought exercise becomes? And moreover, if similar restrictions were imposed for other faith groups, then no Minister could conduct a marriage ceremony, no Catholic Bishop could read the last rites, and no Rabbi could perform circumcision on an infant male Jewish child—because these are all Christian and Jewish religious laws, respectively.

Right now within our current legal system, American Jews regularly resolve civil matters through rabbinical courts known as beit din. American Muslims simply want to enjoy their same constitutionally guaranteed right. Our First Amendment exists to protect these rights to worship and practice for people of all faiths (and no faith). Ban one, you open the door to banning them all. That’s fascism, and I cannot think of anything more dangerous to the United States than that.

4. What does Shariah say about other religions?

Next, critics claim that Islam wants to “violently dominates the world through force.” If you’ve read this far, you’ve likely concluded such a claim is nonsense. But moreover, the Qur’an goes out of its way to emphatically protect all faiths and people from oppression of any kind.

Islamic Shariah specifically and repeatedly champions absolute freedom of conscience and freedom of religion. For example, the Qur’an goes as far as to oblige Muslims to fight on behalf of Jews, Christians and people of other faiths and to protect their churches, synagogues and temples from attack. (22:41). I’m not infusing my interpretation. The Qur’an specifically mentions churches, synagogues, and temples and commands Muslims to fight those extremists who attack them.

Furthermore, Shariah holds that to be a Muslim, a person must testify to the truth of all past prophets, including Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Krishna, and Buddha—and must respect their adherents. Anyone with common sense can see that it would make no sense for Muslims to celebrate and praise past prophets, and then seek to ban those who likewise celebrate and praise them. On the contrary, Muslims are called to champion religious pluralism. And under secular governance, such religious pluralism is not only possible but protected, as it ensures universal freedom of conscience for people of all faiths and no faith.

Finally, in 630 when Prophet Muhammad (sa) returned to Mecca and peacefully became the ruler of Arabia, his primary condition for non-Muslims (and Muslims) to reside in Arabia was that they allow all people of all faiths—be they Jews, Christians, Muslims or idol worshipers—to worship in peace and without oppression. And this is not theory, nor my opinion, but documented history.

For example, the highly respected 19th century British historian Stanley Lane Poole describes the situation upon Prophet Muhammad’s (sa) triumphant return to Mecca, after two decades of exile, as follows:

“But what is this? Is there no blood in the streets? Where are the bodies of the thousands that have been butchered? Facts are hard things; and it is a fact that the day of Muhammad’s greatest triumph over his enemies was also the day of his grandest victory over himself. He freely forgave the Kureysh all the years of sorrow and cruel scorn they had inflicted on him; he gave an amnesty to the whole population of Makkah. Four criminals whom justice condemned, made up Muhammad’s proscription list; no house was robbed, no woman insulted. It was thus that Muhammad entered again his native city. Through all the annals of conquest, there is no triumphant entry like unto this one.” (Lane Poole, quoted in introduction to Higgins’ Apology for Mohammad pp ixxi)

Likewise, another well known 19th century scholar Reginald Bosworth Smith writes in his his landmark book “Muhammad and Muhammadism”:

“Now would have been the moment to gratify his ambition, to satiate his lust, to get his revenge. Read the account of Muhammad’s entry into Makkah along with the account of Marius Sulla as he entered Rome, one would be in a position to recognize the magnanimity and moderation of the Prophet of Arabia. There were no proscription lists, no plunder, no wanton revenge. From a helpless orphan to the ruler of a big country was a great transition; yet the Holy Prophet retained the nobility of his character under all circumstances”.

I can cite scholar after scholar, but I’ll end with just one more for the sake of brevity. World renowned historian Sir William Muir writes on page 513 of his biography on Prophet Muhammad (sa), “Life of Mahomet” as follows:

“The long and obstinate struggle against his pretentions maintained by the inhabitants of Makkah might have induced its conqueror to mark his indignation in indelible traces of fire and blood. But Muhammad, excepting a few criminals, granted a universal pardon; and, nobly casting into oblivion the memory of the past, with all its mockery, its affronts and persecution, he treated even the foremost of his opponents with a gracious and even friendly consideration”.

This is how Prophet Muhammad (sa) treated those who exiled him, killed his companions, and killed his children and grandchildren. Beyond mere justice, this is a level of grace unmatched in world history. Think about how these historians—all of whom are non-Muslim might I add—are describing Prophet Muhammad (sa) when he attained power? And contrast that to the disinformation and demonization you see in the media today? These actual academics attest that no house was robbed, no plunder, no mass punishment—even that the integrity of women was protected and no woman was insulted. This is the man and religion that right wing provocateurs want you to fear. Documented history paints a very different picture—one of compassion, freedom of conscience, and absolute justice.

5. What about countries that oppress people and claim they follow Shariah?

So if all of what I have said above about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (sa) is true, why do we have theocracies in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan? This is a valid question.

Here’s the truth. Such countries exist as theocracies not by following Islamic teachings, but by opposing them. They have ignored the fundamental tenet of justice inherent in Islamic Shariah, and have instead used Shariah as an excuse to gain power and sanction religious extremism. It’s likewise important to understand that these nations don’t exist in a vacuum. The US Government continues to protect and uphold the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia. US interventionism funded the Mujahideen of Afghanistan, who now rule as the Taliban. That US and UK overthrowing the democratically elected President of Iran in 1953 set it on a collision course for what we now see today in the IRGC. This is not to absolve the leaderships of any of these nations for their injustices, but instead to demonstrate that these injustices did not come about because of Islam itself, but due to a myriad of forces that violated the fundamental tenet of justice and human rights. A combination of western interventionism, unlimited oil money, and propped up dictatorships have caused these current atrocities, and it would be foolish to ignore that. Consider that the world’s largest Muslim majority nation, Indonesia, while far from perfect, is nothing that anyone could describe as an oppressive dictatorship.

To be sure, not a single example of a “Shariah compliant” country exists. In fact, I would go as far as to argue that the most “Muslim country” in the world is likely the United States, because our US Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of thought, and secular governance—all built on absolute justice for all people. This commitment to absolute justice is the hallmark of Islamic Shariah. Those nations that oppress in the name of Islamic Shariah are as justified in their claims, as “Christian” enslavers who claimed their right to enslave Black people was based on the Bible, or the right to commit genocide of Indigenous Peoples was because God “ordained” it.

As for the “violent” verses from the Qur’an that are cited by extremists and critics alike—honest legal interpretation abhors quoting an excerpt as a means to understand the full law. You can read that article here, and it will make clear that the alleged “violent verses” are in fact a guidance on self defense and protecting universal freedom of conscience for people of all faiths and no faith against the onslaught of extremists.

In sum, Islamic Shariah guides a Muslim’s personal relationship with God, just as the Old and New Testaments respectively guide Jews and Christians in their personal relationships with God. These paths to life-giving water are nothing to fear.

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to read this essay. If nothing else, I hope it serves as a reminder that fear and ignorance are often louder than truth—but that doesn’t make them right. The truth is, Islamic Shariah—like Jewish Halacha and Catholic Canon law—is deeply personal. It is not a political agenda or a looming threat. It is a spiritual path rooted in our humanity, justice, compassion, and humility. And as history shows with the past systemic demonization of Catholics, Mormons, and Jews, weaponizing someone else’s faith for personal political gain is nothing new in the United States—but it’s always dangerous.

It is important we all understand that when bigots use disinformation tactics to smear Islamic Shariah and stoke fear, they’re not just attacking Muslims—they are in fact undermining religious freedom for everyone. That is why it is critical we all stand united against this religious discrimination. And that’s why I ask you to join me—not in fear, but in solidarity. Not because you’re Muslim, but because you see me and my fellow Muslims as your neighbors and equal humans. That unity against fascism is how we not only survive, but thrive as a nation.

In closing, I can promise everyone reading this that ‘Shariah Law’ will never ‘take over’ America—but I make no such promises about Shakira Law.

This is an update to an incident that happened some time ago, and it’s about the solution to violent threats. I wish I didn’t have to keep writing pieces like this. But as I continue to speak up for justice online, the threats keep coming. Recently, as I spent time with my family, I received another anonymous threat—this time from someone texting me from the number +1 (514) 587-3182.

They threatened me with violence, slurs, and even posted what they believed is my home address. It turns out, these calls aren’t random, but targeted. And my data being online isn’t an accident, it’s often maliciously sold by data brokers for profit.

Below is the conversation, slightly edited for brevity. After, I share the very important reason I publicize these threats, I share a meaningful solution called Incogni to protect yourself online, and why I need your support. Let’s Address This.

The Conversation

The initial unsolicited text came in to my private cell phone number. At first I did not understand how they got my number, nor do I understand why they were able to text me even after I blocked them — which I did right away. Now I better understand how they perfectly legally procured my number. More on that in a minute.

None the less, here is how my morning went:

You are a nazi and a disgusting human-being. Shame on you 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱

The number allegedly traces to Montreal, Canada. But it became clear it was likely a Google Voice or other burner number. I responded condemning the fact that these pro-genocide apologists love hiding behind private screens and blocked the number to stop communication. Yet, the extremist at the other end of the line continued.

You deserve to burn in hell don't worry you will in the afterlife. Little Hamas supporting nazi asshole.

I made clear to them that I was uninterested in engaging them.

Qasim Rashid:
Thanks fascist. You can go now.

That didn’t go over too well, and they continued to send abusive texts. I once more made clear that I was not willing to engage them due to their cowardly anonymity.

Qasim Rashid:
I don’t debate anonymous fascists. If you had courage you'd show yourself.

And that’s when they responded with a chilling message, echoing the fascist words of how Nazi sympathizers describe the Holocaust.

Aww 60kk isn't enough soon more everyday little hostage taker 🖕🖕

The 60K referred to the low estimate of 60,000 Palestinians who have been killed in this genocide and holocaust perpetrated by the Israeli government, and funded by the United States government. The extremist’s statement that “60K isn’t enough” with a promise of more murders is a pro-genocide statement. It mimics exactly how Nazi apologists describe the horrific atrocities of the Hitler regime against the Jewish people. This is yet another reason I don’t debate anonymous bots on the Internet, in my email, or on my personal cell phone. Inevitably, they promote violence and dehumanization. I made clear now a third time that I was uninterested in engaging this person and that they should stop messaging me.

The Moment I Realized They Had My Personal Data

It’s one thing to get random death threats. It’s another when extremists profess to know where you live. The next response from this extremist was direct intimidation to me and my family’s personal safety. They texted me a private home address on the assumption that I still live here (I do not, but it was an accurate former home address). They added that they would get “Nazi scum off our streets,” apparently a violent threat directed towards me.

I now realized that this was not a random troll, but someone threatening direct violence and with specific personal information. It was someone targeting me for my human rights advocacy, my faith as Muslim, and my refusal to bend the knee to extremism and genocide. I responded to ensure they knew I recognized their threat.

Are you threatening me with violence? Why are you sending me that home address? How did you get that? And what do you mean “off our streets?”

Once I asked for clarity on how they got private residential information and what they meant by their threats, they likely realized they’d gone too far and divulged too much.

I made clear I would be reporting their threats. They refused to answer my questions but continued their dehumanizing rhetoric, mimicking the way Nazis spoke about the people they violently targeted and murdered. I let them know I would be reporting their threats to the FBI, which I have.

Finally, they divulged who put them up to these violent threats—the “Canary Mission.”

What is the Canary Mission? It is one of the most destructive forces in America today. As The Nation reported on them in 2023:

The Canary Mission is a massive blacklisting and doxxing operation directed from Israel that targets students and professors critical of Israeli policies, and then launches slanderous charges against them—charges designed to embarrass and humiliate them and damage their future employability. All secretly funded by wealthy Jewish Americans and Jewish American foundations. Not content with online slander and blacklisting, Canary Mission agents have also been involved in physical intimidation.

So who is funding this violent intimidatory secret organization? The Nation explains:

Like all of Israel’s espionage and covert operations in the United States, Canary Mission’s links to Israeli intelligence—and the Mission’s American financiers—are well hidden. But as a result of a slipup on a tax form a few years ago, those links began to be revealed. And in the process was exposed the role played by one of the wealthiest families in California, headed by publicity-shy billionaire Sanford Diller, a major Trump backer who had donated $6 million to a pro-Trump political committee. Diller was also a pro-Israel extremist, supporting a long list of right-wing Islamophobic organizations. They included the American Freedom Law Center, founded by a man who even the Anti-Defamation League said has a “record of anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-black bigotry,” and Stop Islamization of America, which “has sought to rouse public fears about a vast Islamic conspiracy to destroy American values,” according to the ADL.

And finally, as The Nation (among other outlets) reports, the people funding Canary Mission and other racist orgs are adamantly supremacist and genocidal:

In addition to Canary Mission, the Central Fund also directs millions of donations to a wide range of racist and extremist settler groups. Among them is Lehava, a far-right Jewish supremacist group based in Israel that has staged marches chanting “Death to Arabs.”

Thus, it became clear why this person felt so comfortable sending me such violent threats.

Friends, this is what we face: A billionaire funded violent extremist org who hides in the shadows of anonymity to destroy people’s lives for daring to speak up against genocide and injustice. The extremist threatening me continued their threats to make it explicitly clear their goal is to destroy me. Thus, they once again used dehumanizing language against me, describing me as a “rat” just as how the Nazis described the Jewish people. Yes, I’ve reported this to the FBI.

Why I Share This

The very important reason I share these threats is to show you the reality of what it means to speak up for human rights in America today, and the need for unity against this vile intimidation. Shadowy billionaire funded orgs, aligned with Trump and other racist politicians, send you anonymous texts to remind you they know where you live and have the power to harm you.

Every time this happens I am presented with a choice. Tone it down, or double down? Toning it down might provide temporary reprieve and safety, but what good is personal safety when the world is on fire? Doubling down undoubtedly increases risks to my personal safety, but I’ve decided I cannot live life in fear of extremists, especially as my fellow human beings are suffer horrific atrocity at the hands of those very extremists.

And to be clear, for years, I have been consistent and resolute: I reject antisemitism unequivocally. I always have, and I always will. My advocacy isn’t silent either. It’s why I’ve been privileged to speak at the funeral of Holocaust survivors.

It’s why, when antisemitic extremists demolished a Jewish cemetery near my home when I lived in Philadelphia, I worked to activate my local Muslim community to help clean up the cemetery:

Members of the Philadelphia branch of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, an American-Muslim organization, also visited the cemetery and helped in the cleanup efforts, national spokesman Qasim Rashid said. Salaam Bhatti, another spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said members were at Mount Carmel cemetery Monday helping with “whatever the cemetery needs.” “This attack is not just an attack on our Jewish brothers and sisters, but on our common community,” Bhatti said. “We believe we need to be protecting our fellow humans from this extremism.”

It’s why many of my most steadfast allies in this fight are Jewish. Jewish readers, Jewish leaders, Jewish activists—standing shoulder to shoulder with me against genocide and oppression. They understand, as I do, that never again must mean never again for anyone.

Whenever I’ve been invited to Seders and Synagogues to break bread or speak on interfaith harmony, I’ve embraced the opportunities. These moments of unity and solidarity are important to a healthy society, in significant part because unfortunately, provocateurs have long tried to drive a wedge between Muslims and Jews.

We cannot allow that to happen.

I will continue to stand up to antisemitism because hatred of Jewish people is indefensible and inexcusable. And I will continue call out injustice and genocide against Palestinians, because genocide of the Palestinian people is indefensible and inexcusable.

It is impossible to do this alone. I will, however, be sure to protect myself.
