Experts Already Warned Us This Was Coming

This isn't speculation. It's the exact mechanism the Brennan Center for Justice—one of the country's leading authorities on election law—has been warning about. As the Brennan Center notes, generative AI:

now has the capability to convincingly imitate elected leaders and other public figures … The proliferation of deepfakes and similar content poses particular challenges to the functioning of democracies.

Meta handing Newsmax’s archive and AI infrastructure to hundreds of millions of users isn’t a hypothetical risk. It’s that exact threat, arriving right on schedule before midterms.

Call It What It Is—State Media

It’s no secret that Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg has done a complete 180. From banning Trump from Facebook after Trump incited an insurrection, to paying Trump $25 million as a settlement for banning him. Meta has continued to grovel before Trump in a pathetic attempt to gain favor with the aspiring autocrat, and this latest move with Newsmax is another example of that capitulation.

And now Meta is proudly announcing a partnership with Newsmax, which boasted:

Newsmax Inc. announced today that the Company has entered into an AI content partnership with Meta Platforms. Under the agreement, Meta will have access to Newsmax’s digital news content. Meta will be able to draw upon Newsmax’s significant current reporting as well as archived content across its platforms to support AI queries across Meta’s apps and devices. Newsmax views this agreement as an important step in its broader strategy to work with leading technology companies, expand the reach of its journalism and make the Company’s distinctive perspective available through emerging AI technologies.

NewsMax is the right wing propaganda outlet fined $67 million for election denialism. It regularly publishes such volatile headlines and false stories as this:

Meta is helping Newsmax expand this disinformation. Imagine labeling election denialism, dangerous misogyny, and anti-Muslim hate as “journalism.” Now, hundreds of millions of Meta users will be subject to grotesque disinformation right before midterm elections. This is catastrophic for our national security and public trust.

But now that you’re aware of this, what do we do to respond? If you know me, I do not cite problems without offering meaningful solutions—and I offer two such solutions below that I invite you to engage with.

How We Fight Back

First, we must understand that this isn’t an unfortunate lapse in judgment. It is collusion. A soft coup through compliant media executives and billionaire owners who are terrified of upsetting Trump—and more terrified of losing market share.

Corporate media is serving power, not truth. And we’re paying the price. Cowardice in journalism is not a neutral act. It is betrayal. And we don’t have time left for soft takes and polite critiques. Not when fascism is knocking on every door.

State Legislators Are Linking Arms to Fight ICE—and It’s Working

The federal government is betting that a constant churn of new controversies will exhaust the public and keep states from responding. That bet is losing.

Yesterday in Chicago, I joined nine state lawmakers from six states at a press conference to send a clear message: states are not moving on, and not backing down. The conduct of the federal government is an outrageous affront to the rule of law, and states have both the authority and the will to assert their own rights as states and protect communities.

The press conference, which my organization State Futures co-hosted with Illinois State Senator Graciela Guzmán (one of nine co-chairs of our State Futures Federal Response Coalition) brought together legislators from Illinois, Colorado, Maryland, Oregon, Wisconsin, and California who have been fighting hard and winning to protect civil rights, uphold due process, and defend communities in the face of escalating federal tactics and this administration’s constant degradation of constitutional norms and the rule of law.

Joining Sen. Guzmán were Illinois Representatives Lilian Jimenez and Norma Hernandez, Colorado Senator Mike Weissman, Maryland Delegates David Moon and Nicole Williams, Oregon Representative Farrah Chaichi, Wisconsin Representative Ryan Clancy, and California Assemblymember Sade Elhawary. Sen. Weissman and Del. Moon also serve as co-chairs of the State Futures Federal Response Coalition.

The timing was fitting. Hours before we took the podium, WIRED reported that new draft ICE detention contracts include language declaring that state and local laws “shall not apply” to detention facilities – a contract clause attempting to erase state authority with the stroke of a pen. A federal judge in Washington state recently rejected nearly identical language. But the fact that the federal government is still trying tells you everything about the moment we are in.

And it underscores why the work these state legislators are doing matters so much.

What’s Happening In The States

During the 2026 legislative session, State Futures is tracking 284 bills introduced across 34 states. Our tracker is the largest publicly available resource on state-level immigration and rule-of-law legislation. In the past few months, we’ve published three in-depth playbooks for state legislators, which are menus of policy options states can draw from as they draft and pursue solutions.

Over 50 bills have passed in 15 states so far this year: bans on 287(g) agreements between local police and ICE, “No Secret Police” bills requiring law enforcement to identify themselves, protections for sensitive locations like schools, churches, and hospitals, new private rights of action for residents whose civil rights are violated by federal agents, regulations on detention facilities, data privacy protections restricting the sharing of personal information with federal authorities, and more.

That is real, concrete, enacted law. And it represents tremendous momentum. This may not be the narrative you see in the press, which is consumed by the crushing horror and chaos at the federal level. But the reality is that states are fighting back, hard, and - increasingly - together.

Indeed, what makes this moment different isn’t just the volume of legislation across statehouses. It’s the coordination behind it. Our Federal Response Coalition includes 112 lawmakers from 35 states and has been meeting regularly since late 2025. During the legislative session this year, they met weekly. They’re sharing bill language, comparing strategies in real time, learning from each other’s wins and losses, and building a body of law together that is far more coherent and powerful than anything any single state could produce alone.

As Sen. Guzmán put it yesterday: “One of the greatest gifts that State Futures, and in general our camaraderie-ship, have to offer is that no one state is fighting ICE and the federal government alone. Every single one of us has watched this administration test the limits of state authority. Every one of us has seen our communities become the testing ground for new forms of surveillance, intimidation, and detention. Every single one of us has had to ask themselves the same question: how do states respond?”

We are proving the answer. State legislators are coming together in a unified front — sharing tactics, resources, ideas, and lessons learned. Linking arms and getting it done.

The Bigger Picture

I want to say something I’ve been thinking and writing about for a long time, and I want to say it clearly.

We cannot keep treating state-level policy as a tactic we reach for when we’re out of power in Washington. That short-term, unsustained investment in state-level policy, leaders, and infrastructure has been a critical — nearly fatal — mistake. For decades, one side of the political spectrum invested heavily in state-level infrastructure while the other treated states as an afterthought and a back-up plan. The results speak for themselves.

As Heather Gerken – former Yale Law School Dean and current President of the Ford Foundation – has observed, federalism has no partisan valence. It is just a tool, one that has been used far more effectively by one side than the other. She has also made the point that the familiar story of the states as 50 laboratories of democracy is a “campfire tale.” In reality, there are two laboratories: one red, one blue. And as political scientist Alexander Hertel-Fernandez has established, the red one has been winning.

That ends now.

State Futures recently celebrated our first birthday. In that time, we’ve grown to support a network of nearly 900 state policymakers who share our values — legislators and State Financial Officers across 49 states. It’s the counterweight to ALEC and the State Policy Network that has been needed for decades. Our side may be tardy to the party, but we’re growing fast and getting work done.

The federal government is betting that a constant churn of new controversies will exhaust the public and keep states from responding. Yesterday’s press conference, and our work over the last year, is proof that the bet is losing. State lawmakers are more coordinated, more resolved, and more effective than ever.

This is what collective state action looks like. And we’re just getting started.

Last week, a 17-year-old child named Anthoneil Williams II called 911 while in distress. Austin Police arrived, and executed him in cold blood with a barrage of more than 20 rounds. Let’s Address Texas State Director Saadia Mirza covered this tragic story in detail. And as I painfully reflected over Anthoneil’s murder, I realized something. Citing “fear for their lives,” Uvalde police cowered for three hours while an armed terrorist mass murdered children. But now, citing “fear for their lives,” Austin police opened fire in 3 seconds to murder an unarmed child in distress holding a water bottle.

This begs questions.

Why is “I was scared” a magical get out of jail free card for cops? Why are we arming feckless cowards with deadly force, when they’re clearly not able to control themselves under pressure? And most of all, what the hell is the point of police to “protect us” if every time they get scared we end up with more dead kids?

Then it hit me, the answer to these questions are ones that the pro-unlimited police budget crowd will never admit. That is, law enforcement does not protect us because the US Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that police have no legal duty to protect us. None.

I repeat, the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that law enforcement has no obligation to protect the American people from harm or even death, and we as ordinary Americans should have no expectation of security when police are present. I am not exaggerating. In this article I share the receipts, and more importantly, the solutions on how we actually protect ourselves. Let’s Address This.

The Story of 4-Year-Old Joshua

Before diving into Joshua’s story—a question to think about. If the Supreme Court has made clear that police have no duty to protect the public, then why does anyone think we increase public safety by increasing police budgets?

Well guess what—the data already proves that increased police budgets do not increase public safety—but something else does. Let’s read Joshua’s story to understand how we got into this mess, and better understand how we get out.

In 1989 SCOTUS ruled in Deshaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services, that 4-year-old Joshua DeShaney could not sue child welfare officials for failing to intervene to protect him from a beating so severe he suffered brain injury that left him institutionalized. Why? The Supreme Court concluded:

Nothing in the language of the due process clause itself requires the state to protect the life, liberty and property of its citizens against invasion by private actors.

Castle Rock, Parkland, and Uvalde

As devastating as this ruling was, it only got worse from Joshua’s story. Some 16 years later in 2005 the Supreme Court reaffirmed in Castle Rock v. Gonzales that police have “no legal duty to protect the public.” In that case case, a woman filed a restraining order against her estranged husband to protect herself and her three daughters. Her estranged husband violated the restraining order and kidnapped her daughters. Gonzales went to law enforcement to ask them to enforce the restraining order and bring her daughters back. Police refused. In the meantime, her estranged husband killed all three of her daughters and was himself killed when he later attacked the police department. Gonzales sued, alleging her daughters were killed because police failed to enforce the restraining order as they were required to do. Again, the Supreme Court ruled, quite cruelly:

[Gonzales] has no constitutionally-protected property interest in the enforcement of the restraining order, and therefore could not claim that the police had violated her right to due process.

This ruling is especially prescient now as Michiganders are right now reeling from a horrifically similar story of a man who killed his and his wife’s six children, then killed her, then set the house on fire and killed himself.

A Federal judge reaffirmed this ruling in 2018 when Parkland students sued the police officer who ran away from the shooting, holding that the officer had no duty to protect the Parkland students suffering a deadly mass shooting. To be clear, this was the police officer hired specifically to protect students from harm and mass shootings.

In short, the U.S. Supreme Court argues, perhaps better than any entity in existence, that public safety does not increase with more police funding, in part because police have no obligation to protect the public from harm and death. And while likely unintended in their cruel decision making, the Supreme Court’s draconian rulings force us to recognize that we must stop seeing public safety as a Police matter—and instead see it from the lens of societal needs. A lens that accounts for (but is not limited to) things like addressing poverty, addiction, mental health access, suicide prevention, homelessness, and other similar social services—all things police officers are not trained to do but asked to do anyway.

As I’ve said before, law enforcement responds to crime, but a living wage, food and water security, accessible healthcare, affordable housing, addiction treatment, and public education prevent crime. So if we want safer communities, then it is critical we invest in building up people, not meting out punishments.

The Data On How We Actually Ensure Public Safety

A recent study of more than 4.3 million 911 calls showed “only 6.4% of 911 calls were for violent matters.” As TIME reports:

But according to this study, mental health incidents only made up 1.3% of all the calls examined, and only 4% of those calls resulted in an officer being dispatched (though the survey did not track the actions of 911 dispatchers specifically). The largest percent of the calls were traffic-related at 16.8%. followed by “disorder” at 16.2% and “suspicion” calls—from individuals worried that a crime might happen or has happened—at 12.8%. Calls for violent incidents specifically were at 6.4%.

Imagine, only 6.4% were for violent incidents, meaning the other 94% were for non-violent matters! We must therefore ask ourselves: If public health and safety is our top priority—do our current budgets reflect this reality? I would argue emphatically, no.

Take Uvalde, for example, the site of one of the worst atrocities ever committed in modern American history. Robb Elementary had 576 students—and 84% were economically disadvantaged. We painfully recall how 19 students were murdered, 17 more suffered bullet wounds, and 538 are emotionally scarred the rest of their lives. Yet, the school had just one counselor to tend to the mental and social health needs of those children. One. Meanwhile, Uvalde Police consumed 40% of the town budget—and they still had no obligation to protect students from being murdered. This is, in short, a failed system.

It’s a Mental Health Issue, Right? Well…

Then, people cite mental health issues as a reason for violence—but the facts show that people with mental health issues are not some major or even minor source of community violence, and are most likely to suffer violence as a result of their mental illness, than perpetuate violence. As the Frontiers in Psychiatry Journal reports:

People with a mental health disorder have a significantly higher risk of becoming victims of violence compared to the general population. Previous research has focused largely on violent crimes such as physical assault, aggravated acquisitive crimes, violent threats, and sexual offenses in this population. Fewer studies have observed rates of victimization of non-violent crimes such as theft, robberies, or threats in this population for which the elevated risk compared to the general population persists.

And once again, the data backs this up, for example, as it relates to police violence. From 2015 to 2021 police killed more than 1400 people with mental illness. This is one consequences of asking law enforcement to address matters they have zero training or ability to address. What sense does it make to send an armed agent of the state to address someone suffering a healthcare crisis?

But, despite these dire circumstances, proven models exist to turn the tide. I’ve written previously on the need to end qualified immunity and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act—but beyond that—we must also allocate meaningful resources to effectively meet societal needs. And we have proven models that demonstrate what this could, or maybe should, look like.

The Proven Public Safety Model Works

For example, in 2020 Denver deployed a pilot non-lethal mental health team to respond to mental health 911 calls and other non-violent 911 calls, all as a means to meet societal needs better than responding with an armed and untrained law enforcement officer. As reported:

Previously, Denver 911 operators only directed calls to police or fire department first responders. But the Support Team Assistance Response (STAR) pilot program created a third track for directing emergency calls to a two-person team: a medic and a clinician, staffed in a van from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

After an astounding 748 deployments, the STAR pilot program reported zero violent incidents, zero needs to call the police, and zero need to arrest anyone in need. This meant that civilians received the critical 911 support they needed through trained professionals, that law enforcement was more available for the 6.4% violent 911 calls, and that Denver’s budget better reflected the societal need to advance public safety. A true win-win for all parties involved.

Meanwhile, in our current policing strategy, police kill more than 1100 civilians a year (leading the developed world). The USA likewise leads the world in incarceration rates, we suffer the highest recidivism rates at nearly 70%, and more than 60% of people in jail need mental health treatment. This is not public safety. But cities like Denver prove a community model works.

Conclusion

The epidemic of police violence against civilians is yet another reason why I repeat this fact: Investing in public safety does not mean more police—it means more money for healthcare, education, housing, and social services. Safer communities come from investing in people—not punishments.

All the evidence repeatedly proves this. One would have to be in a bootlicking cult to think or argue otherwise.

Therefore, we must expand upon Denver’s model. Because in our current reality—where police have no duty to protect dozens of murdered school children from terrorism in Parkland or Uvalde, then escape liability due to the absurd doctrine of Qualified Immunity in places like Austin, is not just. The current model of people suffering from social ills like addiction, mental illness, and poverty getting jailed or killed—not treated—is not sustainable and will only lead to more violence.

Finally, and significantly, this model also makes the lives of police officers safer and better. The “Blue Lives Matter” folks should be 100% behind this because a public safety model that ensures police aren’t asked to do things they aren’t trained to do means the lives of police officers are safer as well.

We cannot rely on the Supreme Court to save us, unfortunately. But fortunately, we know a better and proven public safety model exists and works. One that recognizes true public safety as allocating resources through the lens of societal need, not through the lens of more law enforcement and harsher punishments. We simply need to political will and mass movement of citizens pushing them to ensure it happens.

It’s insane that they’re getting away with it. I’m going to read the statement released in response by Rep. Pocan, and it’s remarkable.

The Trump regime is laying the groundwork to invade Cuba. I’ll be talking to Rep. Pocan about it because I think most Americans have no idea of the history of blockade and injustice that the US government has imposed upon Cuba.

Congressman Mark Pocan is somebody I’ve admired for a long time because of his principal stances on human rights. He’s been at the forefront of condemning the genocide in Gaza and being unapologetic about it. He’s an example of a Democratic member of Congress doing things right, leading with courage and being fierce and relentless about it. That is the kind of leadership that we need.

Meanwhile, six Republicans broke with their party to vote against it. Which means if Hakeem Jeffries had kept his caucus united—if these six Democrats had simply held the line—the bill would have failed 212-216. But it passed. Because six Democrats chose the wrong side. Let’s Address This.

The NDAA And Destruction of Democracy

This particular NDAA does two things horrifying that should alarm every American who believes in democracy.

First, it effectively hands over a portion of the US military to Benjamin Netanyahu—a man the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for war crimes. How is this not treason?

Second—and this is the part that directly impacts every person reading this—it attaches Trump’s fascist SAVE Act to the bill, gutting voting rights for millions.

I have sounded the alarm on this draconian piece of legislation since 2024 when it was first introduced under President Biden. The short version: it is a coordinated campaign to deny many Americans—disproportionately Black, brown, and poor—access to the ballot box. If passed, Black people will have fewer voting rights in 2026 than they did in 1966. And six Democrats just helped move it one step closer to becoming law.

This is indefensible. It is infuriating. But take note, we are not helpless.

This Is Exactly Why We Are Marching

But let me be honest. We are also marching because I am tired—painfully tired—of protests that trend on social media for a day and dissipate with the news cycle. I am tired of the status quo that makes noise and demands too little.

So we’re doing something about it.

1,000 Miles to Memphis exists to be different. Every mile is a voter registration opportunity. Every stop is an organizing event. Every city on the route—Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, Memphis—is a community that needs resources, visibility, and solidarity. And our target is measurable: 100,000 voter registrations.

After kicking off July 25th in Nashville, we march for 30 plus days through Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, and Memphis—ending at the National Civil Rights Museum where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood with striking sanitation workers in 1968. We are marching for the descendants of that same struggle—and for every American whose right to vote is under attack right now.

We will be joined along the route by members of Congress, state elected officials, surprise guests, and musical artists whose presence we will announce soon. This coalition is growing. And we need you with us. Here’s how.

11 Life Lessons

I’m sure this list may change in the future with added wisdom. For now, I present the "always do" and "never do" things I would tell my younger self...and I hope you might find inspiration from it as well.

1. Always remember to cut yourself slack and lift yourself up. Plenty of folks will try to tear you down—don't join them. Be your own biggest champion because sometimes you're all you'll have—and you're enough.

2. Always cherish the moment, not get lost waiting for the destination. The destination may come, or it might not. But that moment is here and what you'll miss the most. A movie night. A laugh in class. A snowball fight. Cherish it.

3. Always say yes when a friend calls you for lunch or coffee. Always. The older you get the more you'll realize that "no" you gave was the last time you ever spoke.

4. Always pay for lunch. Don't make a big deal out of it. People remember when you do something kind that you don't have to do.

5. Never remind someone you did them a favor. No matter how small or large, do the favor because it was right to do, not because you expected some reward.

6. Always protect the privacy and dignity of your life partner. Find someone who complements you and compliments you. Someone you can be vulnerable to.

7. Always treat your children with impeccable respect, especially when they screw up. How you treat them is how they'll normalize the world treating them. If they feel respected, they'll respect others, and they'll command respect of others.

8. Never let your anger decide your decision making. There's an old adage, "When you speak, speak sweetly, so if you must eat your words, you have a tasty treat."

9. Always act to change injustice with your actions. And if you can't, then speak out against it with your words. And if you can't, then steel yourself against its impact.

10. Always write down when you lend a friend or loved one money. Even your closest family. And even then, lend with the intent that if they can't repay you (because life happens), you'll forget about it. Cherish people more than money.

11. Always remember the difference between disappointment and regret. You can be disappointed you didn't achieve some goal despite your best, but regret comes from not giving your best.

Trump’s Big Lie Continues to Grow

Trump claimed a government investigation found that hostile foreign actors could “change votes on a deep level that could not be detected even with a deep audit,” and further alleged that “there are 278,000 foreigners illegally registered to vote” in the United States.

This is pure fabrication. Zero evidence supports either claim. Not one document, witness, data set, or forensic finding. Nothing—because nothing exists to find. But note how Trump phrased his allegation—fraud “on a deep level that could not be detected.” This is not how facts work—it’s how propaganda thrives.

And Trump knows it is a lie. Perhaps someone should remind Trump that he personally shut down not one but two of his own voter fraud commissions during his first term—commissions he initially demanded—because they returned findings of no evidence of fraud. He then filed 61 lawsuits following the 2020 election across multiple states and jurisdictions, challenging results before judges appointed by Democrats and Republicans alike. He lost all 61. Not because of judicial bias or a rigged court system. But because in every case his legal team could not produce the evidence the law requires—because it does not exist.

And then he ignited an insurrection.

And the sad truth is, that insurrection perpetuates to this day, only this time it is far more dangerous. Here’s what Trump is trying to do, and how we fight back.

Trump Is Trying to Steal the 2026 Midterms

First, if we follow Trump’s claim to its logical conclusion, it works against Trump. It means that under Trump’s own presidency, hostile Chinese hackers allegedly committed the most sophisticated and consequential act of election fraud in American history, and Trump, with the full intelligence apparatus of the United States government at his disposal, failed to stop it, failed to detect it, and failed to prevent it. And given that extraordinary display of executive incompetence and national security breach, he wants the American people to reward him with even more power.

Ahem. No.

Or how bout this. Apparently it was the Democrats’ fault. By that genius claim, Democrats failed to cheat to win in 2016, failed to cheat to win in 2024, and then committed an insurrection on January 6 on the one elected they did manage to win. Anyone who believes any of this gobbledygook (that’s an extremely technical legal term I learned in law school) needs a formal intervention.

The reality is that Donald Trump is trying to steal the 2026 election, which is why he added another demand to pass the so-called SAVE Act during his unhinged diatribe. As I have written before, the SAVE Act will return the United States to Jim Crow America in its voter restrictions. It will decimate voter access for women, for Black and brown people, and for low income people.

We must stop its passage, and just as importantly, we must double down on our actions to expand voter access. The most common question I receive is, “how can we substantively respond to this attack on voting rights?”

My answer: We follow in the footsteps of the civil rights giants who came before us to fight for the right to vote in the first place. This is why we launched 1000 Miles to Memphis earlier this week—and why I want you to choose one, two, or all three actions below to help us register 100,000 voters in the South and nationwide.

The Urgency of This Moment—And Why I Announced 1,000 Miles to Memphis This Week

Earlier this week I announced the launch of 1,000 Miles to Memphis—a 30-day, 1,000-mile voting rights march from Nashville through Atlanta, Birmingham, and Jackson, ending at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood with striking sanitation workers in 1968.

We announced this march before Trump’s Thursday night speech. And Trump’s Thursday night speech is precisely why this march cannot wait.

Trump will not stop. He will continue to manufacture election fraud narratives without evidence—not because he believes them, but because he needs them. The Pattern That Explains Everything

Trump will not stop until he is stopped. He will continue to allege voter fraud because he is a cheater in everything he does.

He cheated on all of his wives. He cheated his fellow New Yorkers through decades of financial fraud for which he was held civilly liable. He cheated the contractors, laborers, and working people he hired to build his properties—refusing to pay them for their work. He cheated American taxpayers and was convicted of 34 felony counts by a jury of his peers. He tried to cheat the 2020 election by inciting an insurrection.

And now—having exhausted every other avenue—he is attempting to cheat the American people by manufacturing an election fraud narrative, for one purpose and one purpose only: to lay the groundwork to cheat once more and steal the 2026 midterm elections before they happen.

We cannot let that happen.

On Monday afternoon, Sohail was working at a kiosk in the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. Suddenly, 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen approached him and asked Sohail if he was Muslim. Sohail confirmed that he was.

Larsen pulled out a knife and stabbed Sohail fifteen times.

Court documents confirm Larsen was “religiously motivated.” Police say he told them he targeted Sohail due to his religion—and that he had intended to kill him—indeed that he wanted to “kill all Muslims.” Larsen was arrested shortly after on charges of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.

A man was stabbed fifteen times in an American shopping mall because he said yes when someone asked if he was Muslim. My mind echoed back to Wadea Al-Fayoume, the 6-year-old Palestinian child stabbed to death by his white supremacist landlord in 2023. This hate is connected, and if we do not act, it will continue to get worse. Let’s Address This.

My Response To The Anti-Muslim Hate Crime

A Snapshot of What American Muslims Experience Daily

I want to show you something painful—content warning ahead. What happened to Sohail in Utah is not separate from what lands in my inbox, my messages, and my comment sections every single day—often dozens or even hundreds of times a day. As you read these, ask yourself, is this sustainable for our society?

Robert Denby sent an unsolicited message reading: “I hope someone slashes your throat.”

Denby threatened me with exactly how Larsen attacked Sohail. Sadly, this is not the exception, but the norm that I and countless American Muslims experience daily.

Joel Kingera wrote: “You’re a f---ing piece of sh-t, Islamic motherf---er who is a piece of f---ing sh-t and I was sh-t on you… I was sh-tting your kids… And I would f---ing pissed down your throat when you’re on fire you f---ing piece of sh-t Islamic motherf---er.”

Norm Gibson wrote: “The less Muslims in the US the better.”

I responded: “Fewer. The grammatically correct word is fewer. If you’re going to be in my country the USA at least try to insult in coherent English. Otherwise you look incredibly dumb along with your bigotry.”

Christopher Fjeld sent me a private message: “You’re one dumb f--- little b---h I’d love to have my f---ing hands around your f---ing throat you piece of f---ing lying garbage. Islam is a f---ing cancer and must be eradicated. Muhammad is a f---ing punk piece of sh-t He is garbage and so are you Islam is f---ing garbage you f---ing c---.”

Chris Greenz sent me a photo of a bullet-riddled car windshield and wrote: “Stop spreading false information or I will have thousands report your page and get it shut down.”

An anonymous email arrived this week addressed to me, calling me a “race baiter who has no place in America,” using a vile racial slur, and closing with: “before we start cleaning house.”

And then there is the image—circulated widely in right-wing online spaces—reading “To All Muslims, Somalis, & Illegals in America” above an AI-generated American flag middle finger.

I share these not for sympathy, but because they are evidence. Evidence of what unchecked, politically sanctioned, media-amplified Islamophobia produces at the individual level—the same ideology that produced Peter Michael Larsen’s knife. And for those asking if I report these to the authorities, yes, as often as possible. But how do you report dozens of death threats a day? And to whom?

These are not isolated unhinged individuals. These are the predictable output of a political and media ecosystem that has spent years propagandizing Muslims as “the enemy.” This is not only unsustainable, it is inevitably dangerous and deadly.

This Did Not Come From Nowhere

Donald Trump launched his political career on the Muslim ban, falsely claimed Muslims celebrated 9/11, ranted unhinged that “Islam hates us,” then enacted multiple Muslim bans. MAGA Republicans have made “Shariah Law” the new red scare, ignoring the crumbling economy and rising poverty in the United States, to instead focus on passing “anti-shariah” laws. And meanwhile, too many politicians on the left remain cowardly silent, too afraid to speak up for Americans who are Muslim, even as they are violently targeted for their faith.

Peter Michael Larsen’s hate did not magically appear—it was grifted to him by politicians, pundits, and a click bait media ecosystem that profits off anti-Muslim hate. Fortunately, Sohail survived. But this should never have happened in the first place. He lived his life as a Muslim, as our Constitution protects. And a Trump supporter tried to kill him for it. Now, just imagine the outrage if the roles were reversed?

A Final Ask

Because the above messages—and the knife in that Utah mall—are designed to do one thing: divide us. To make Muslim Americans afraid to participate in public life. To make other Americans afraid of their Muslim neighbors. To manufacture the very conflict that right-wing politicians need to sustain their base and their power.

I refuse to give them that. And I am asking you to refuse it too.

Reject the culture wars being waged against your Muslim American neighbors. Reject the anti-Muslim hate being laundered through the legislative chambers.And call out the silence of politicians who cower when asked to stand up for Muslim Americans too.

I am not stopping. I will keep writing, I will keep documenting, I will keep speaking, and I will keep marching for justice. I will continue to show up—for Sohail, for every Muslim American who received a threat this week and did not have a platform to name it. I will continue to show up for the multiracial, multifaith coalition of Americans who believe that justice is not a resource to be rationed but a right to be extended to everyone.

ICE fascists have killed three more innocent people this week.

Two fathers, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine, and a third 28-year-old yet unnamed victim in Florida.

This week, I sat down for an interview with Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, running for U.S. Senate in Minnesota, to talk about ICE extremism, and several more critical topics that corporate media is ignoring. This includes a grotesque $13M in AIPAC attacks, the fact that Rep. Angie Craig voted to send Netanyahu the 2,000 pound bombs he repeatedly dropped on Palestinian civilians to commit genocide, and Rep Craig’s embrace of anti-Muslim and anti-Somali hate in Minnesota.

Lt. Gov. Flanagan warned that we cannot let ourselves get desensitized to this violence, and drew a sharp contrast with her primary opponent, Rep Craig, who voted for the Laken Riley Act, voted to thank ICE, and still refuses to call to abolish ICE.

By contrast, Lt. Gov Falangan’s consistency and commitment to justice is exactly why we need her in the US Senate. She’s a leader whose values haven’t shifted with political convenience; but have been the same since the start of her career—with a firm commitment to working families. The year was 1987. My family and I immigrated to the United States. I was a child, new to this country, to its language, to its rhythms—trying to understand where I belonged.

The leaders who answered that question were not politicians or celebrities. They were the Black aunties and uncles at my mosque on Chicago’s south side. Leaders who grew up in Jim Crow America, marched in the Civil Rights Movement, put their bodies on the line for the right to vote—and suffered the fire hoses, billy clubs, and jailhouse doors. They embraced a south Asian Muslim immigrant child as their own and normalized community service the way we normalize getting coffee. They showed me, by example, that showing up for your community is not optional—but the minimum requirement incumbent on all of us.

I will never be able to repay that gift. But I have spent my entire career trying to pay it forward. Today, 1,000 Miles to Memphis is the biggest attempt I have ever made to do exactly that. Why This March & Why Now

We are marching because the Supreme Court has gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais—one of the most critical federal protections against racial discrimination in voting. The effects are already landing across the South: fair maps dismantled, Black representation stripped, and ballot access eliminated for millions.

I have also written in detail about the so-called SAVE Act—a coordinated campaign to ensure that certain Americans—disproportionately Black, brown, and poor—have less access to the ballot box in 2026 than they did in 1966. With midterms mere months away, the window to fight back is closing faster than many realize.

Here’s the thing—I am tired of marches that make noise and demand nothing. I am tired of protests that trend on social media for a day and dissipate with the media cycle. 1,000 Miles to Memphis exists to demand change. Every mile is a voter registration opportunity. Every stop is an organizing event. Every city is a community that needs resources, visibility, and solidarity. And we will deliver.

Because our target is not theoretical, it is measurable: 100,000 voter registrations this Summer. But this only works if we all work together.

The Game Plan

We kick off July 25th in Nashville and march for 30 days through Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, and Memphis to register 100,000 voters. Our march ends at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, where in 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood with striking sanitation workers. He was there, fighting for the dignity of Black workers who were paid poverty wages. We will be there fighting for the descendants of that same struggle—and for every American whose right to vote is under attack. Here is our route.

And the fight for democracy has never belonged to one community alone. Therefore, 1000 Miles to Memphis is led by a deliberately multiracial coalition. Our organizing team includes activists, academics, artists, organizers, scholars, and truth-tellers—who have never waited for permission to fight for our civil rights:

Ronaldo Salgado was scrolling through social media when a video stopped him. He did not at first recognize the man in the video by his face. The video was too far away and blurry. But then his blood ran cold. He recognized the man ICE attacked by his voice—crying out for help.

That is how a son learned that ICE had killed his father. ICE fascists have now killed 10 of our neighbors in 2026—that we know of. And the horrifying truth is that due to the lack of any accountability and consequences, more innocent people will die at their hands. We are not hopeless, and we must continue to fight back. Here’s how.

Who Lorenzo Was

As Saadia Mirza, Houston-based State Director of Let’s Address Texas wrote:

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was 52 years old. He was a father of three sons and had lived in this country for nearly 35 years. He built homes in North Houston for over three decades and he had no criminal history. Lorenzo had recently done biometric scans and fingerprinting as part of his federal work permit application, and was close to obtaining legal status.

He was a small business owner who served and loved his community. Far from “being a leach on the system,” Lorenzo lived the American dream. Far from the lie that “immigrants are why we don’t have housing,” he literally built homes for decades. And far from the claim that “immigrants bring crime,” Lorenzo had no criminal history. Not a record. Not a charge. Nothing.

And on Tuesday morning in Houston, ICE killed him in broad daylight.

Then they lied, claiming Lorenzo was “trying to ram them with his car.” The video posted online showed quite the opposite—they they rammed him with their cars.

And then the injustice compounded—as it always does.

Lorenzo was not even the person ICE was looking for. The three witnesses who saw the shooting are now being pressured to self-deport—witnesses to a killing, being silenced by the very agency responsible for it. And Lorenzo’s family still cannot claim his body.

His family cannot bury him. They cannot say goodbye. They cannot grieve in the ordinary human way that every person who has ever loved someone deserves.

The president of Mexico has announced criminal charges against the Trump regime for killing a Mexican national unjustly. When a foreign government is filing criminal charges against the United States for killing its citizens on American soil—we have crossed a threshold that demands we say plainly what this is: Tyranny and fascism.

The Ten We Know Of

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is the tenth person ICE has killed this year—that we know of. I add, “that we know of,” because we do not know the actual number.

ICE is withholding data on deaths in its custody. The Trump regime is not meaningfully enforcing any requirement to publish that data. ICE continues to block access to its detention facilities—which I will call what they really are: Gulags. Concentration camps. Places where human beings are held without adequate medical care, without due process, without transparency, and apparently without accountability even when they die or are killed.

Ten is the floor. The ceiling is unknown—deliberately, by design.

I want you to know their names.

Alex Pretti. Renee Good. Keith Porter. Heber Sanchez Domínguez. Victor Manuel Diaz. Parady La. Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz. Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres. Geraldo Lunas Campos. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.

Ten people. Ten families shattered. Ten names that corporate media has not placed on a front page, not read aloud in a primetime broadcast, not demanded congressional hearings over. Indeed, after each murder, the media cycle moves on.

I share this not to depress you, but to remind you of the work we have cut out before us. And to share some positive news—what progress looks like as we fight back.

What Accountability and Resistance Look Like

It would be easy—understandable, even—to feel that the scale of this cruelty is insurmountable. That the machinery of ICE, backed by the full authority of the executive branch and a Supreme Court majority willing to bless almost anything, cannot be stopped.

I want to tell you about Florida. Because Florida just proved otherwise.

“Alligator Alcatraz”—the grotesquely named immigration detention center built deep in the Florida Everglades—has been shut down. Not by a congressional vote. Not by a court order alone. By people who refused to stop showing up.

Two groups led this fight. The first is the Miccosukee Tribe—a Native community that found refuge in the Everglades centuries ago specifically to escape persecution by white supremacists, fleeing deep into those swamps to survive. Their ancestral lands became the site of a concentration camp for immigrants. They joined a lawsuit and they showed up—at nearly 50 protests over the course of a year—outside the facility built on the land their ancestors bled to reach.

The second is The Workmen’s Circle—a 125-year-old secular Jewish organization whose entire existence is a testament to the principle that “never again” must mean never again for everyone. They stood alongside the Miccosukee people, protest after protest, week after week, until the pressure became impossible to ignore.

As El País reported:

The Miccosukee community found refuge from white persecution deep in the Everglades swamps centuries ago. Together with environmental groups, they succeeded in forcing the closure of the immigration detention center built on their ancestral lands.

A Native tribe whose ancestors fled white supremacy. A century-old Jewish organization whose founders fled pogroms. Standing together. Showing up together. Winning together.

This real time example is a reminder of what this country is capable of when people of conscience refuse to go home. Use that in your local community, and let’s continue to build towards justice.

Lorenzo Deserved Better—So Does Every Person on That List

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo spent 35 years building homes in Houston. He raised three sons. He was doing everything the system asked of him—the biometrics, the fingerprints, the paperwork, the patience. He was close. He was following the rules of a country that rewarded his decades of labor and love with a bullet and a viral video that his son stumbled across while scrolling through his phone.

It is a cruel system that forces people to jump through decades of bureaucracy to get “legal” status, and then kills him in cold blood because he doesn’t have the required paperwork in hand.

His family cannot claim his body. Witnesses to his killing are being threatened into silence. The agency responsible faces no accountability. And the president who empowered that agency is not being held accountable by a Congress too cowardly to act and a media too distracted to sustain outrage.

But here is what I know. The Miccosukee Tribe held 50 protests. The Workmen’s Circle stood with them every time. Alligator Alcatraz is closed. Ten people we know of have been killed—and because we know their names, because journalists and advocates and community members refused to let those names disappear, the pressure is building.

Every protest matters. Every lawsuit matters. Every article that refuses to let Lorenzo’s name fade into a statistic matters. Every person who calls their congressman, who shows up at a demonstration, who refuses to normalize the killing of human beings by a federal agency operating without transparency or accountability—matters.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s voice was crying out for help in that video. His son heard it. Now we have all heard it.

Let it remind you that we must continue to use our voices, while we still have them.

The Money: Who Stevens Actually Works For

Before we get to what was said on that debate stage, let us understand who paid for the candidates standing on it.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is 100% people-funded. Not a dollar from corporate PACs. Not a dollar from AIPAC. Not a dollar from energy companies or ICE contractors or big pharma. His donors are the people he intends to represent. The FEC lists his funding in full. It is transparent. It is clean. It is exactly what campaign finance reform looks like in practice.

Haley Stevens is drowning in corporate money. From DTE Energy—the Michigan utility company that has spent years exploiting Michigan ratepayers while posting record profits. From ICE contractors—the companies that profit from the detention and deportation of immigrants, including the ones violating our Constitution in communities across Michigan right now. From at least $40 million from AIPAC—the same lobbying organization funding Republican Mike Rogers, incidentally—pouring money into her campaign because she has voted, repeatedly and consistently, to arm Israel even as it commits genocide in Gaza.

And then there is Portugal.

The Intercept reported that someone flew Stevens and her mother to Portugal—to a conference funded by big pharma and big oil, centered on cryptocurrency. Stevens has not explained who paid for that trip or why. She has not offered transparency on what was discussed or what was expected in return.

But she had the audacity to stand on a debate stage and accuse Abdul of lacking transparency about his funding. His funding—which is publicly listed, entirely from people, and contains zero corporate donations.

This is the Haley Stevens playbook: accuse your opponent of the thing you are most guilty of, and hope voters do not check the receipts. Well, we are checking them, and there’s a whole lot more below that voters need to see.

ICE: A Vote She Cannot Explain—And a Lie She Cannot Stop Telling

On June 9, 2025, Haley Stevens voted for a House resolution that expressed “gratitude to law enforcement officers, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, for protecting the homeland.”

She voted to thank Trump’s ICE. On the record. The vote is documented. All while ICE was killing a record number of Americans in 2025.

On the debate stage, Stevens offered the same explanation she has been peddling for months: “she allegedly had no choice.” The resolution also condemned a horrific antisemitic attack, she says, and voting against it would have meant opposing that condemnation. She was trapped.

Only, that’s simply not true. And it was called out as a lie by many, including by Mallory McMorrow, months ago.

Here is what Stevens hopes voters miss: Democratic Congressman Joe Neguse introduced a separate resolution—H. Res. 476—that condemned the exact same antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, without the provision thanking ICE. A clean resolution. A straightforward condemnation of antisemitism with no poison pill attached.

Haley Stevens refused to cosponsor it. She refused to vote for it. Stevens deliberately chose the resolution that thanked ICE over the one that did not. That is not being trapped. That is making a choice. And then lying about it on live television—twice—to voters who deserve the truth.

But the ICE vote is only the beginning of Stevens’ record on immigration enforcement.

After voting to thank ICE, she accepted contributions from Axon Enterprise—the company that manufactures TASERs and cameras for ICE, with $13 million in ICE contracts in federal fiscal year 2025 alone. She visited a Michigan ICE detention facility where a man named Nenko Gantchev had died in custody—and her takeaway was to praise the “kindness of the women guards.” A reporter at her own press conference pushed back, noting that families of detainees reported guards turning their badges around to avoid identification and cutting phone calls when inmates tried to describe the conditions.

Stevens’ response to all of this on the debate stage was not to defend her record. It was to call for “strongly worded statements”—the Chuck Schumer special. The same brand of performative outrage that has failed working people and immigrant communities for decades. And while up to 97.4% of the people ICE is rounding up and arresting have no criminal record whatsoever, Haley Stevens thanked them. This is indefensible.

Abdul El-Sayed has been unequivocal since day one: abolish ICE. Not reform it. Not issue statements about it. Abolish an agency that is killing Americans, rounding up immigrants in violation of our Constitution, and operating with the impunity of an institution that has never been held meaningfully accountable. And replace it with a justice based organization actually committed to upholding our Constitution and due process rights. Abdul has traveled across the country to stand in physical solidarity with the communities ICE is targeting. He has put his body where his words are.

This is the difference between a fighter and a performer.

Israel, Gaza, and the War Hawk Record Stevens Tried to Hide

Next, Stevens tried to distance herself from Netanyahu. Do not be fooled.

$40 million from AIPAC does not buy distance from Netanyahu. It buys votes for Netanyahu’s agenda. And the receipts—documented by journalist Prem Thakker at Zeteo—are extensive.

Haley Stevens voted to:

• Stop the Lebanon War Powers Resolution—a bill that would have asserted congressional authority over the illegal expansion of American military involvement in Lebanon.

• Send Israel $26 billion more in military aid after it had already killed more than 34,000 Palestinians. Then, send Israel another $17.6 billion in additional aid—a bill that even President Biden would have vetoed.

• Ban the State Department from citing Gaza Ministry of Health death tolls—even after the State Department and the Israeli military itself admitted those death tolls were accurate and likely an undercount. Stevens voted to prevent her own government from acknowledging the scale of the death she voted to fund. This isn’t transparency, it is an attempt to cover up the genocide you enabled.

• Next, Stevens voted to sanction ICC officials as they pursued war crimes charges against Israeli leadership. Let me be precise about what this means: Stevens voted to punish the international court seeking justice for genocide. How is that different from Trump’s attacks on the prosecutors investigating his insurrection? It is not. It is the identical impulse—protect the powerful from accountability—wearing a different flag. And it is arguably a far worse impact because it seeks to deny and whitewash genocide.

As a human rights lawyer I can remind you that the 10th and final stage of genocide is denial. Haley Stevens is using her awesome power in Congress to deny genocide and sanction the very authority established to hold accountable those who commit genocide. If her moral compass cannot even protect genocide victims, how can she be trusted to protect democracy?

But Stevens’ injustices yet continue.

• She voted to express “disgust” at South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the ICJ—calling the case “meritless, counterproductive, and completely without basis in fact whatsoever.” At the time, Israel had already killed more than 25,000 Palestinians. The UN, the ICC, the ICJ, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem, Israeli Physicians for Human Rights, and Israeli genocide scholars had all reached the same conclusion. Haley Stevens called the case “meritless.”

• Here at home, Stevens forced through the TikTok sale or ban—which ultimately resulted in the platform being handed to Larry Ellison, a staunch Trump ally and billionaire. Stevens voted for an outcome that handed a major social media platform to a Trump donor. The “national security” justification dissolved into billionaire consolidation. The result speaks for itself.

Stevens kept saying on the debate stage that she “has the receipts.” She never showed a single one. We just showed you the actual receipts she hopes voters don’t see.

Abdul El-Sayed was on the opposite side of every single one of these votes. He has been consistent, clear, and unequivocal: stop bombing children in Palestine. Start building schools for children in Michigan. The ICC, the ICJ, the UN, Amnesty International, and Israeli human rights organizations have confirmed genocide. Abdul agrees—because the evidence demands agreement.

The Lie About Kamala Harris: Racism Dressed as a Political Attack

Here is the moment in the debate that I find most bizarre—but critical because it serves as a microcosm of who Haley Stevens is.

Stevens alleged on live television that Abdul El-Sayed was opposed to Kamala Harris’s presidential run, and that he did not support her.

This is a lie. A documented, timestamped, easily verifiable lie. Yet Stevens made it loudly and proudly as if the Internet doesn’t exist.

Joe Biden stepped down on July 21, 2024. Abdul issued a public statement on July 22, 2024—the very next day—throwing his full support behind Kamala Harris. If anything, once could argue he endorsed her ‘too quickly,’ before a robust primary process could unfold. But he endorsed her immediately, enthusiastically, and activated his entire network to support her campaign with 107 days until the election. Why? Because he recognized the dangers of Republicans and Trump, and he was not about to waste any of the little time that remained.

Stevens made this accusation knowing full well—as everyone in Michigan politics knows—that Arab and Muslim Americans have been scapegoated for Harris’s 2024 loss by people looking for someone to blame other than the corporate Democratic establishment whose failures produced the conditions for that loss.

And by the way, here is the actual data, which Stevens also will not share: according to a joint AP/Fox exit poll survey of more than 100,000 voters, Muslim Americans voted for Harris over Trump by a larger margin (+30%) in 2024 than they voted for Biden over Trump (+29%) in 2020. Muslim Americans did not cost Democrats the 2024 election. The corporate Democratic establishment’s failure to fight for working people cost them the 2024 election.

To lie about Abdul’s support for Harris, on a debate stage, in the context of a campaign against a Muslim Arab American candidate, is not just factually wrong. It is a racist dog whistle. It is the deliberate activation of the same xenophobic narrative that has been used to scapegoat Muslim and Arab Americans for every Democratic failure while those same Democrats take their votes for granted.

Stevens chose to lie about Abdul’s record and activate anti-Muslim racism rather than defend her own policy record. The reason is simple: she cannot defend it.

What the Debate Actually Revealed

The debate boiled down to two different strategies and two very different visions for the future.

Abdul spent the debate doing what a candidate should do: exposing the flaws in his opponent’s policies, and sharing his vision of what he is fighting for—money out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare for All. Abdul pointed out Stevens’ cruel opposition to universal healthcare. Her support for AIPAC and arms to Israel during a genocide. Her pro-war voting record. Her drowning in corporate money. Her ICE gratitude vote and the lie she has told about it ever since.

Stevens, meanwhile, spent the debate doing what a candidate does when they have lost the policy argument: attacking her opponent’s character. She lied about his medical credentials—a racist attack I have already addressed in detail in a previous piece. She lied about his alleged lack of support for Kamala Harris. She bizarrely said he looks like Mike Rogers. (Yes, seriously). She never once engaged with a single policy position Abdul actually holds.

Why not? Because she knows the answer—attacking his policies is the same as attacking what working Michiganders want. Universal healthcare, abolishing ICE, ending genocide, money out of politics—these are not fringe positions. They are the positions of the majority of Democrats, the majority of independents, and a significant number of Republicans.

And for those concerned with “electability”—poll after poll shows Abdul beating Stevens in the primary and beating Mike Rogers by a larger margin in the general. Abdul is the more electable candidate. Every one of the last four polls confirms it.

And speaking of polls, the WoodTV poll (who hosted the debate) afterwards shows viewers overwhelmingly supported Abdul over Stevens by an 83-17 margin.

Conclusion

The Chuck Schumer brand of politics—corporate money, strongly worded statements, AIPAC checks, and war hawk votes—got us into this mess. It will not get us out. Michigan has a chance to send a generational candidate to the United States Senate—someone who has never taken a corporate dollar, who fights for universal healthcare as a human right, who names genocide as genocide, and who has the moral consistency to be trusted with the power Michiganders would give him.
